the battle of the Somme started with a tremendous barrage to soften up the Germans for the 1st of July’s assault.
The British army had 57,470 casualties of which 19,240 were killed. By the time the battle was over we took 420,000 casualties and for what a few yards of land?
Please remember them for their sacrifice for a few moments tomorrow as we are the only generations left to do so.
I hope that one day man will realise the futility of war but I fear not in my lifetime.
