During my Bimble along the Thames yesterday, before the heavens opened with accompanying thunder and lightning, I came across St Helena tied up alongside HMS Belfast. I assumed it was another survey vessel on a good will visit to London. A quick Google this morning and it was something far more significant. RMS St Helena is the last working Royal Mail Ship in the world and has been supplying the remote island of St Helena, 1,200 miles off the West Coast of Africa in the South Atlantic, with passengers and cargo for the last 26 years with its job being taken over by an air route when the islands first airport opens later this year. It is due to be decommissioned and sold off and is in London as part of its farewell tour.
