European holiday car rental

Anybody with recent experience of Car rental, the aim is to rent a car for 2 weeks from a reputable company without having to pay ‘super collision damage waiver’ at the full hire company rate, but I do want to minimise any potential excess payment.
I guess one has to take out a personal damage excess policy etc

Also any recommendations about using (say) Holiday Autos or similar car rental brokers ?

As I remember, one of the problems used to be that when you gave your credit card details to pay an upfront payment, some of the less scrupulous would invent/manufacture some compelling reason as to why, on completion of the hire, they shouldn’t further plunder your stash. Perhaps that scam has been done to death and they’ve all retired to the Bahamas or somewhere.
