Globe-trotting Piper Cub adventurer is on hunger-strike in Cardiff Prison, and having lost 3 stone, has drawn up a will.
The issues are numerous and complicated, but seem to relate to the possession of a machine-gun, which was at one time mounted on his DH-2 replica, since sold.
Maurice’s ever-lasting struggles with the police, the legal system, the ‘top brass’ of the vettinary profession, the CAA, the CIA etc are clearly taking their toll, and his intention of completing a global flight in a Cub seems to be a remote one at present.
”A Dr Tegwyn M Williams of Caswell Clinic, Bridgend has written to the Court stating that he has been unable to detrmine Maurice’s mental state to a conclusive level and that the only way to make a full determination would be to have him sectioned under the mental health act (sec 35) http://www.hyperguide.co.uk/mha/s35.htm for 28 days assessment at his clinic. Dr Williams has asked the Prison Govener to consider allowing Maurice a court appearance for bail, suggesting that it is by no means clear that Maurice is mentally incapable” Flying Vet Blog update 5/8/2009.
