The disaffected ‘American colonists’ were primarily British.

Or the Irish…the Palestinians…or Argentinians. ;)…or any of the “rebels” that fought imperial England for a few hundred years, most notably, the American colonists. They didn’t seem bothered at going up aginst the world’s greatest power.
When you’re fighting for a cause (whether right or wrong), you’re not frightened of greater forces.
