I occasionally sometimes now and again get Flypast,a magazine a friend of mine, who I’ve not seen for years, used to get and passed onto me one lunch break, but does anyone else read this or have any other recommendations? I know little about aircraft, have never even been in one, apart from a long dead cockpit of some retired jet when I was in the ATC briefly, but I have an interest in these silver birds, especially the old prop planes.
Also there used to be digital channel called wings but since ntl have gone to Virgin its no longer there! Not happy!

As I travel to work on the train I normally buy all 3 aviation comics (Flyer, Today’s Pilot and Pilot) I also get Loop through the post and pick Go Flying up from the Flying Club.
I also subscribe to Top Gear and buy Total Guitar and Motor Boats Monthly occasionally..
…Probably enough for significant flight time if I add them all up!

Well all magazines are niche products really, but Flypast looks to be the best one. I just have so many hobbies and I have to try to juggle them all and decide which mag to get. Another one I’ve had is Airplane i think its called but its more technical and most of it goes over my head.

Amazing, you make Flypast, our Forum sponsor sound like some niche product only occasionally available during a leap year in the outer islands.
Flypast must be the largest selling publication of its type in the country and is sold all over the world. A must for the dedicated historian although this Forum is a useful conduit for breaking news (and rumours).
Second choice is Propliner, only four times a year, but a goldmine of propeller information and nostalgia, a tribute to the volunteer contributors that each issue surpasses the previous.
And finally Sport Aviation, the official magazine for the EAA which chronicles the trials and tribulations of amateur aircraft builders predominately in the US. When restorers and new builders take up to twenty years to build their dreams, this magazine records their triumphs and heartbreaks.
Last choice would be all Air Britain products, depending on your sphere of interest.

I too read the occassional FlyPast, though I now consider Key publishing’s premier service is the provision of this forum. As a PFA/LAA member I get the mag every month.
Pilot has lost its ‘soul’ since JG let it go, and is no longer funny/bitchy/ controversial or very interesting any more. I think i have read too many flight tests in my time, and now find most of them pretty dull. However, there are a few really worthwhile authors around, and anything by Brian Lecomber is worth reading.
For news, gossip, info, everything is online a month before it hits the news stands. Having once avidly consumed 4/5 titles a month, I now get just one by default, and on the others can save £4 (10 minutes fuel in a Cub!) , dont have to find the time to read it, and don’t have to make space to store it.
I feel the sun is setting on magazines of this kind, and doubt they can remain profitable in the longer term, especially if the GA ‘industry’ contracts in line with present trends and declining numbers of PPL holders.
The internet is a huge free-for-all, but unfortunately it is the ‘free’ aspect which may spell an end to the availability of contemporary aviation based articles. Though the mags do not pay writers very well, most contributors to the internet get nothing at all, which is not much incentive to knock out two thousand well-crafted words.
Having said all that, the mags have never looked better, and all the colour printing, good paper and decent design makes for an attractive product if you are in the mood.
