Portable transponders

Has any company yet produced (or is anyone in late stage development) a handheld style transponder for GA use? I have a project in mind that needs me to complete an airways leg in my paramotor(!!!) for a possible record attempt.
Many thanks.

I have not seen any Transponder specifically designed to be hand held. The power out put of current panel devices is such that you would not wish them to be near to your vital parts. Also you need power take off from the engine unless you wish to carry a hugh battery. There really needs to be designed a device as smalll as a hand held radio but also one that has be proven to be safe.

This is your best option. If you look at the accessories you will see it can be made “hand held” to a limited extent.

I’m not aware of any, and I understand there are two issues both related to the required power output (Remember, unlike a transceiver a transponder has to broadcast continually and at quite high power).

1) Power consumption is an issue, it really needs a power source, batteries won’t hack it.

2) Output also is a problem. Having something that powerful broadcasting close to your body could generate health problems.

Hope you find a workaround – it sounds an exciting project.
