What end to land

How do atc or pilots work out which end to land on a runway…it’s something to do with wind direction isn’t it? 😀

Rather than waiting for passing traffic, you could start promoting this forum amongst your mates and start something of your own… 🙂

P.S. We are watching 😉

Annoyed of Lincoln

Thankyou, Propstrike and Newforest
Looks like I’ve been “succered”(?).
As for stephen 88……you’re quite clearly NOT the innocent young Air Cadet type that I spent so many years working with, and my response to you is NOT repeatable on a forum like this. However, my confidence in human nature remains, and I will be delighted to receive an indication from you that your original enquiry was, after all, genuine.
………………..but, as Newforest has already said..”I won’t hold my breath”!
Regards
Paul

As I expected, our initial poster has not reappeared since his first and only post. So four minutes for his first post and two minutes to register makes him a six minute member.

Paul, you are quite correct that this is a good arena However, some ‘ contributors’, especially ones who pop up on a first post and then ask a question which seems verging on the inane, and then add a big ironic grin, are difficult to take seriously, and are probably taking the micky out of us, rather than the other way round. It is not terrible thing to do, but it is mischevious, and invites flippant responces.

My thoughts exactly but I didn’t want to extend the discussion further, so we will wait for a response from the initiator but not hold our breath?:)

Paul, you are quite correct that this is a good arena to ask genuine questions, and there is a wealth of experience here, from LAA (PFA) flyers, through warbirds, up to ATPL’s. As a rule, it is pretty supportive and friendly place, and if you hang around for a while, you are quite likely to be offered some flying and some hands-on experience. It is not usually a flame-fest, and egos are generally under control, or as much as they can be in aviation!

However, some ‘ contributors’, especially ones who pop up on a first post and then ask a question which seems verging on the inane, and then add a big ironic grin, are difficult to take seriously, and are probably taking the micky out of us, rather than the other way round. What sort of flying are you doing ? Are you anywhere neer Sturgate, or maybe operating out of one of the strips which Lincs seems to have a few of ?

Welcome, Stephen

I’m quite new around here too, so don’t let the “Clever Dicks” put you off………………….chances are THEY also had to ask basic questions once, too!
There are far more contributors to this forum like BlueRobin who take the trouble to supply sensible information in a polite and friendly way.
Most of us don’t need to demonstrate our status as “God’s Gift to Aviation”

Well, that’s another aeronautical puzzle finally sorted out.

Log in next week, when we ask ‘Flying Helmets- Which way round should I wear mine?

I always land the front end now. The one time I got muddled and landed the back end first, it went very peculiar, and I was suddenly looking at a lot of sky, then a lot of grass, then a lot more sky etc…

There is a lot of micro-management in GA, but ATC seem to be leaving these details to me.

😀 😀

Indeed it is.

If you were lined up on the runway, not moving, with 20 knots of wind blowing on your nose, then your airspeed is 20 knots. Groundspeed being stationary is nothing. Think of the wind going over wings at 20 knots so creating lift; velocity is relative and is a function of the lift equation

So if we land into wind, we have a reduced groundspeed and so a shorter roll. Conversely landing with a tailwind means the ground roll is much longer and you require much more runway. It’s also a trickier thing to do a with tail and crosswind component.

If the wind is bang 90 degrees across the runway, then either direction on the runway is valid (0 knots head or tailwind). But you have to consider the aircraft’s ability to maintain a straight line on the runway given i) the control authority and ii) your ability to cope.

In all cases, before landing it is up to you to decide if the runway in use is a good choice given the conditions.

Are you thinking of doing or are commencing your PPL, Stephen?
