Just a little exercise I did recently that folks might be interested in:
— using the latest projections for the global economy from PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the latest data on military expenditures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute
— average of MER and PPP projections for 2030, apply latest (2013) military expenditure rate (% of GDP)
Projected Military Expenditures in 2030 (in adjusted USD $bns)
USA: 967 [3.8%]
China: 627 [2.0%]
India: 306 [2.5%]
Russia: 163 [4.0%]
UK: 88 [2.3%]
France: 80 [2.2%]
South Korea: 76 [2.8%]
Germany: 65 [1.4%]
Brazil: 63 [1.4%]
Japan: 60 [1.0%]
Turkey: 52 [2.3%]
Indonesia: 36 [0.9%]
Australia: 34 [1.8%]
Of course there are caveats and criticisms one can make of both projections for particular nations, and the methodology more broadly, but nonetheless the results are interesting and provide a useful baseline for consideration.
