Oban

I have no idea whether anybody here has ventured as far north as Oban. If you haven’t, you may well not be aware of the local politics there. Politics which recently saw the highly successful and popular airport operator Paul Keegan, unceremoniously dumped in favour of a political appointee and the airport subjected to a big renovation program.

Well, it now seems that the political pendulum has swung back again. The new boys have been booted out and Paul is back in charge, only this time, with a much improved runway and terminal facility, all due to open shortly.

Once again, we soft southern jessies will be able to head up Oban to enjoy the hospitality, jammy dodgers, a wee dram, some fantastic scenery, and great hotels.

If you have never been, now is the time to rectify that.

Check the NOTAMs and make your plans.

R.Weaver, … Are you trying to discuss something, or just to flame ?

I don’t think he is flaming at all, it’s just youthful exuberance, which narrow-minded frown upon and the intellgent have the means to tolerate.

I think if people stop feeding the bait which is just too irrisistable to him, then you will have no problems whatsoever. He probably is not aware that you are a moderator which does make a difference to your comments.

Please let’s not have another thread closed because the devil’s advocates want to comment on Mr Weaver rather than aviation. The baiters are the one’s who need moderating.

In point of fact, whilst Oban has an NDB, for the time-being it has no Instrument Approach Procedure. The surrounding terrain is totally unsuitable for an in-line approach in any case.

We “professional” pilots that wish to take larger aircraft into Oban when the weather is poor, make a radar-assisted cloudbreak at BRUCE intersection, before continuing visually up the channel to the field. That sort of thing separates the men from the inexperienced boy-pilots.

R.Weaver,

1) Are you trying to discuss something, or just to flame ?
2) From the passenger point of view, I wouldn’t want to be flown around by someone declaring himself a “professional” pilot, but being scared of a beacon type.

I just hope your GPS never stops working, or that you don’t have to fly in places where you don’t pick up a VOR …

Back to the airfield in to the aircraft and we were off to Islay for a nightstop.

successful battle against midges! 😮 I don’t believe you, nothing wins against midges

Firstly – congrats to Alan. Well done that man and Happy Birthday!

Midges: It was a losing battle at first. I learnt, not to spend an age picking them out of my food, but enjoying them as a tasty protein dressing. I covered myself in repellant, clothing and even wore a stocking over my head. Very funny, very successful. Tents were pitched, but not entered until they had been smoked out with chemicals to send the unwanted midges to a deep peaceful slumber.

Should you need ballast in your Colt for a trip up there, I am happy to reprise our Italian holiday Moggy.

I plan to take the JP up, just as soon as Paul writes to let me know that the runways are up to scratch again.

Highlights for me are too numerous to mention, but how about:

Preferred Hotel, the Lerags House (www.leragshouse.com)
Preferred passtime, Malt Sampling, clay pigeon shooting, lazing around, cuddling up by a roaring fire with your favourite woman (or man in my case, obviously ;))

I had a very comfortable trip to Oban, sat in the back of a Cessna 421 Golden Eagle. 🙂

And yes, it’s a stunning, beautiful area. I’d love to take the Colt up there sometime.

Whilst the Macaroni Pies at Benpeculiar are to die for.

Well base camp was about 10 miles south of Glenfinnan. But looking at the map now, I cannot work out how on earth I did it.

Next time I’ll take the aeroplane. As you know, it is stunningly beautiful.

I have no idea whether anybody here has ventured as far north as Oban.

I walked in perilous weather for about 10 hours to Oban in 1981 fearlessly battling against midges (successfully) and sheep tics (unsuccessfully). Does that count?

Trinny: So what are the highlights of Oban International then? Do I smell a forum fly in coming on? Are you on commission for each landing?

Oooh lovely Oban, one of the best places in the world ! Er… DME from this forum has flown into Oban from Glasgow he tells me. Still trying to persuade him to take a passenger (me) the next time.

In the meantime if anyone else needs a tour guide, I’m yer man ! 😉

That must be the first time I have ever caught you out making a wholly inaccurate statement. 😉
