Wire Recorder Identification

I have very strong memories from when I was a young boy, early 1960’s, of my maternal grand parent’s house in Chingford. My grand father was very much into ‘modern technology’ and one thing in particular has always stuck in my memory. It was a wire recorder and I can remember the a bobbin going up and down as it operated.

I have looked on line but I could not find the exact one.

I have been scanning some more old family photos and came across this photo of my mother in 1951. On the floor behind her is the wire recorder. I have included an enlarged image as well.

Can anyone identify it?

Tony.

Fascinating, I think you will find black boxes record onto wire as well.

Anyone remember the plastic one that came in a serial box, you stuck the plastic “wire” through a hole you punched in the empty box and ran your nail along the “wire” and it played Winsons never so few speech etc. The box amplified it as a speaker
