Most of us have seen the horrific pictures and video by now. I really despair at this I and I have trouble in coming to grips with it all. Simplistically it seems some people want to be closer to Russia and others want to join the EU(unless I have got this wrong) It saddens me to see so much death and violence in what is supposed to be a democratic country. As for the woman be executed by shooting her in the head(images now thankfully removed from the net) Why would we want barbarians in the EU?

Lets hope so,enough blood spilt in both countries.

The fact that religious zealotry plays the key component in Egypt emphasises an irreconcilable difference. If the majority in the Ukraine prefer a loose alliance with Russia rather than ultimate membership of the EU then that outcome has to be accepted.

Two opposing beliefs,in one country it is a religious split ,in the other a loyalty to East /West ,a split that needs to be somehow overcome and a happy outcome, failure to do so is just going to be a disaster.

Not sure if the analogy with Egypt is altogether relevant. But you are right if the majority is significant opposition would neither be justified nor supported outside the country.

Egypt went for a democratic vote, ousted him, military take over now has a major split between rulers and opposition.
It will be different in the Ukraine IF the majority is large enough to withstand a mutiny.

Trump – meaning you foresee further civil disobedience if the opposition candidate loses. I think if that were to happen the current support from the West would fall away.

Well as the ousted President has a lot of the Country behind him and the fact he is supported by Russia, one wonders if it’s only just the beginning.
By: trumper - 22nd February 2014 at 18:32
Oh yes ,i’ll believe that when i see it.

And Yulia Tymoshenko is free and back in Kiev. So new presidential elections and both sides will have to accept the result, whichever way it goes.

Sounds like the Egyptian revolt a while ago

They have impeached the President of the Ukraine and is he is moving East saying it is a coup after fleeing the capital, the police have signed up to back caretaker parliament which has gone back to the 2004 constitution, the defence minister has gone to the Crimea and the Army refuse to take part and fire on civilians. The police have pulled out of the centre of Kiev and the protesters now hold control of all the Presidential buildings.

It’s certainly not looking as good this morning as it seemed last night.
It would seem sensible to hold the presidential election as soon as is practicable – perhaps April/May and for all parties to accept the status quo in the intervening period. But it must be quite clear that all parties accept the outcome of the presidential election – like it or not. Democracy means accepting the majority decision. And that could re-ekect Yanukovich. What then?

Will we see the Russian Army rolling into Ukraine after the Olympics if the violencw continues?
By: TonyT - 21st February 2014 at 18:38
I think he has left it to late to say we will have an election early,

Let’s hope this one sticks. The opposition seem to have got much of what they wanted. But they are going to have to accept the result of the Presidential election later this year, whether it goes their way or not.
And now the parliament has agreed to release Yulia Tymoshenko after two years!!

“It’s about time the EU had new rules. Follow Human and Animal equality otherwise you’re not going to be part of the Union. Simple as.”
What! And miss out on expanding their cherished EU becoming one vast European republic? Pigs will fly first!
And chaps, good though your intentions are towards animals I am sure, it is the treatment of humans by their fellow humans which concerns me far more.

EELightning I could not agree with you more. I would add to that but Moggy already thinks I am a Nazi when I mention some of our neighbours and allies.
I believe a simple sentence: ‘It’s not our doing to introduce rules, the real architects of new rules are the ones that commit acts of uncalled treatment to others.’
I have spent a good deal of my life rescuing cats and trying to find homes for dogs but enough of that or my mouth will get me into trouble!
That’s jolly nice to know. You shouldn’t keep your mouth shut for something you believe is the right thing to do, and what you do is the right thing. I’m quite an Animal Activist and I do everything I can, not to boast but. I have a second job that pays well, it involves touring (Musician you see) and the downside is that we can’t keep pets at home because we’re away from it a lot, my Girlfriend comes with us too, so we can’t look after anything. On the plus side, we donate a percentage of our wage to various Animal charities which is split between them. And as a bonus, it’s poke in the eye of the HMRC too.
Sadly, there never seems enough to be done.

Here-here.
Why would we want barbarians in the EU?
We already have, Romania. Different country, totally different topic I know, but… In Romania there’s a situation happening where it’s absolutely legal to capture stray Cats and Dogs, more about Dogs than anything as there’s more of them, and brutally beat them to death right there and then on the streets. The whole point of this is to get rid of stray animals off the street, no matter how; bludgeon them to death, shoot them, hang them from Trees, drag them behind from moving vehicles, you can even torture them… so long as they’re off the street. Like the situation in the Ukraine, this makes me sick… And this is an EU country that commits these acts of cruelty, it’s not against the law… but it is against the law and ‘illegal’ to own and set off Fireworks.
It’s about time the EU had new rules. Follow Human and Animal equality otherwise you’re not going to be part of the Union. Simple as.

There is enough violence still being shown as it is. You and I know what happens if someone is shot through the head at close range and I would not wan’t my Grandchildren to see that. It seems that Spetsnaz are now involved in Ukrainian Uniforms. God help the civilians if that is true.
