Pollens, flint tools, fossilised animal excrement and remains in the area of the footprints are the main methods.
Did have a chuckle at one paleo-archeologist, as he put it, using evidence found along with special finds, it would be easy to conclude that antelopes were the biggest producers and users of flint tools.

I would be fascinated to know how they date these prints.
Similar examples have been found in other locations around the UK, including the Severn Estuary.
