Handheld microphone

Just a quick question:

I have been flying with a friend, and we had communication problems before take off. We quickly noticed it was related to the handheld microphone plugged in the plane. We took it out, and everything was fine again (the wiring was damaged due to the age / sun).

Now the question, is it mandatory to have such a microphone plugged in as a backup (it is never used, headsets are used instead) The plane is owned by my friend.

Note that this is in the USA, so I guess FAA regulations apply.

If it has to be replaced, it will make a good (useless) X-mas present 😀

Moggy, note it is no handheld backup radio, but just the microphone that you plug into the aircraft.

Radio of any sort is still not mandatory outside a very restricted range of controlled airspaces.

Wessex Boy, I can understand, but the speakers are such bad quality, that I’d rather have headsets with nose cancellation (Especially in Southern California where the air trafic can get quite busy at times)

My ears are of equally bad quality…….

It used to really annoy the Captain if you stuck your head out of the door of the Wessex with your Mic on…you could feel him jump at the controls as the Mic hit the slip-stream….The answer was to use a throat Mic, but I hated them as you sounded like you were under-water

If I was flying solo, I much preferred to use the handheld/speaker than headphones…but then I am known to be slightly strange….

I don’t believe that radio is mandatory in the US (It certainly isn’t here in the UK)

But there are certain classes of controlled airspace which are closed to non-radio aircraft.
