Alan Rusbridger looked uncomfortable in Committee last week, when asked if he loved this country.
Several notables have expressed theirs so what about our membership – do you and if so why?

They say you learn something every day and although I have enjoyed a few England wines none from Cornwall. I must have a look.
By: Lincoln 7 - 15th December 2013 at 11:16
Very much so Chas, although I find the Aus wines, and indeed, some of OUR Cornish wines, far better, it’s just a matter of taste…….:D

I don’t know if I love the United Kingdom. Love is a very emotive word and I’m not comfortable with it in this context.
I’m proud of my country. Proud of it’s history and what we have achieved with such a small island. Proud to be part of a world power and a democracy.
We should all fly our flag somewhere without fear of racism or retribution.
I don’t agree this country is broken or ruined. It’s certainly damaged but that damage comes from within.
Capitalism, banking crisis, corruption. Selling off some of our greatest assets.
Loss of values. Loss of family life. The demonisation of the working class.
Becoming a `service industry` instead of a manufacturing base.
We have been a country of immigrants for thousands of years. We just need to remove the `mass` element and go back to
encouraging the ebb and flow of immigration.
I still cannot understand how I can travel to work on a German owned train that’s powered by French electricity, or that it is cheaper to
haul coal from Poland instead of Wales?
But we do have clean water. Warm beds. Food and safety. A lot more than some countries and
an armed force to be proud of.

I love my country, I love my county, and I even love my village. But, I hate what our EU loving liberal extremist establishment is doing to our country.

Which one? The one i was born in by accident of birth, the one my parents are from, the one i grew up in or the one i live in?
It’s an outdated concept and in reality doesn’t exist other than to keep the masses subdued.
Multinational corporations dictate and control events across the globe, disasteriously often by accident and with no intent or plan, and they do not care about “country.”
People are people, as soon as i see people claiming their little spot on the globe is better than another i know humanity still has a long way to go to become anywhere near the finished article. Made me laugh when somebody claimed that Brit history was unmatched by any other country. Good one!

Shouldn’t this be in the MP’s pay rise thread…..?
If the Gods want it shifting……………they will.

By: Lincoln 7 - 8th December 2013 at 16:28
Moggy. I am aware that is decided by an independent body, who have awarded them that amount because it has been 3? yrs since they had their last one.I could name no end of friends who have lost their jobs, been made redundant, cannot despite applying for work, unable to get it. No, sorry, but they don’t get my vote for a rise, and I would hazard a guess 75% or more of Joe Public wouldn’t like to see them get it.And, since they last got in, just how many Pension awards have they given themselves?.
The public want to see these politicians EARN their money, not just because some indipendent body “Thinks” they should have one.they have to do a lot more than bleat like sheep at P.M.s Question Time on a Wednesday. ACTIONS speak louder than words, lets see some action, NOW not as they like to tell us, “After the next election”.
That’s it, rant over, got to get back into CHRISTMAS…mode,…:D

Just seen on SKY T.V. News, M.Ps are getting an 11.% PAY RISE after the next Election. Thats whats ruining this Country, they havn’t a clue as to how the man in the street has to count every penny
Jim, you should bear in mind that MPs do not decide their pay, it is recommended by an external body for the very reasons you state.
There is no doubt they are underpaid as you can see by the quality of monkeys the job attracts, but right now is not a good time for an increase. I see a few politicos are suggesting they will pass the extra on to charities.

Why ?
By some long drawn out, almost unimaginable, transformationable process, it’s in my DNA.

I grew up as a youngster loving everything about Britain. Through my teens and early twenties I thought the grass was greener almost anywhere else but as I travelled more I realised that it wasn’t, and although I enjoyed living away from the UK for short periods here was home and where I came to feel most at home.
For all its idiosyncrasies, in fact because of them, and its people, its countryside, its sense of humour and self-deprecation and irony, its obduracy, its creative energy, its ability fight back and its strong sense of history and tradition despite recent attempts to destroy and belittle some traditions, for these and many other reasons I love this country.
