A man too embarrassed to admit he’d forgotten to book the venue for his wedding tried to cover his mistake by triggering a bomb scare.

Neil McArdle was due to tie the knot in Liverpool’s historic St George’s Hall.

But he never got round to completing the booking, and rather than admit his mistake, tried to cover his tracks with a hoax bomb call.

The 36-year-old now faces a jail sentence after admitting his actions.

McArdle had planned to marry his fiancee Amy Williams on 24 April this year.

The pair had been sent all the paperwork that needed to be completed in order to legalise proceedings.

However McArdle failed to fill in the forms. Panicking, on the morning of the wedding he went to a phone box near his home and rang St George’s Hall.

He told the receptionist: “There’s a bomb in St George’s Hall and it will go off in 45 minutes,” before putting the phone down.

The venue was immediately evacuated of people and put on lockdown. A bomb disposal unit was also sent to the scene.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the bride and her wedding party then arrived at the hall, still believing the wedding would take place.

But when the hall re-opened around an hour later, with the groom present, it emerged there was no booking in the name of McArdle and Williams.

A source said: “He realised that he hadn’t filled this form in. But he hadn’t got the heart to tell his missus and her family. The whole wedding party turned up to this bomb scare and then they found out there was no actual booking.”

McArdle was arrested later the same day, and is thought to have made a full confession to police.

It is believed he claimed to have made a number of unanswered phone calls from his mobile phone to St George’s Hall after the initial bomb scare, to try and confess to the hoax.

He will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court later this month.

Must have been about to marry a right dragon if he’d rather go to prison than own up to a mistake.
