For better or worse, the monarchy is one of the things that makes the UK…well, the UK. Rather like pubs, Jags, 18/19th century costume dramas, class envy/resentment and the like. Without it (and all the other bits) the UK becomes just another EU placeholder…of no particular identity.

Are there any or many? I would certainly favour retention of the monarchy but would prefer it skipped a generation when the Queen dies. Her great success is in part due to her complete neutrality, a characteristic not shared by her son.
Whether or not we are still a united kingdom with a sovereign in fifty plus years time I am not sure. If we remain part of the EU in its faltering political destiny the answer will be no.

A question for the republicans here.

Without the monarchy there would be a role for a head of state – President if you will.

Who would this be, how would they be found and appointed?

Living “down-under”, I don’t really care but, GEORGE!!!!! Guess HM got her way again this time.

Just as she stopped her son from risking his life in the Falklands, and her grandson risking his in Afghanistan? I think your vision of the interfering old matriarch is just a little wide of the mark.

[QUOTE=mrtotty;2048845 I would hope that come the time he is to be crowned, we will have become a republic a long time since.

I can’t see it, though.[/QUOTE]

Not sure about that but I really don’t care and was relieved to have missed it all whilst on holiday. Woman gives birth – amazing!!:stupid:

I’d guess around 50% of people predicted a girl

George Alexander Louis, the initials spell GAL. I wonder if the choice of names reflects a subconscious expectation of the birth of a girl, as predicted by many?

Not necessarily…..the last King George we had was christened Albert!

Albert Frederick Arthur George, actually, and there’s no law which says you have to use your first Christian name.

Some of the pics I’ve seen with his face screwed up, he looked more a Yoda than a Joffrey.

All babies look like Churchill as well.

I was hoping they’d name him Joffrey.

He’ll be King George the VII (I guess…not that I’m likely to be here when he gets the throne in 50 years).

I was hoping they’d name him Joffrey.
