Also what do we need fighters for instead of ground attack aircraft. I believe the last time the RAF flying a British built aircraft shot down an enemy aircraft was in 1948( lets not mention the unfortunate incident when they dispatched a Jaguar)?

Leave the air combat to the FAA(who were rather good at it in the Falklands) and Army Air corps and scale them back to a ground attack and logistics role with just a couple of quick reaction squadrons to defend the mainland.

Sorry this post drifted it was meant to be just the first paragraph and I am sure it is in the wrong forum for the rest. Still my defence is it is about the waste of money over the years for what? Do we need or can afford lots of toys to try and keep a place in the world that we alone think we have. Why can’t we keep our nose out of other countries affairs and stop trying to be peacekeepers or paymasters in overseas aid. What is wrong with letting the rest of the world go to hell in a handcart and concentrate on our own domestic problems? Goodness knows we have enough of them!
