EU rule 'could force £11 debit card charge on Britons'

Customers have been warned that a proposed change in European Union rules may force banks to introduce annual charges of £11 on debit cards and £25 on credit cards.

Yet more unnecessary costs on our banking accounts. Surely what costs are involved with our card transactions are the concern of ourselves, the retailer, and the card owning banks? Nothing to do with EU bureaucracy and jurisdiction.

What’s the matter with the good old Travellers Cheques ?.

Do not go anywhere near travellers cheques.
I used them as I was informed of places where cashing them carried no charges. So I accepted the slightly worse exchange rate. However the places that Cashed them stopped doing so (sadly only a few weeks before I bought them and nobody updated websites) so I struggled to find anywhere that would cash them, and all charged.

I hasten to add that La poste failed to tell me that they no longer cashed them, until about the 5th branch I visited previously I was told to go to a different branch. La Poste is not renowned for its helpfulness.

It seems not many people can be bothered with travellers cheques anymore.

There always used to be a charge for those, didn’t there. Are they still widely used. I use a Cash Passport, which is perfect.

Didn’t they try this with ATM charges. Everybody just stopped using those ATM’s that charged.
So one bank will write of the charges and everyone will flock to them. Then the charges idea will get dropped.
Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

I wonder what the logistics of using a foreign account, say American would be?

Your theory is good but if the rules are changed everyone must comply so there will be no choice. I fear your “move along, nothing to see” might be a little premature, unless the rule change proposal is dropped altogether.

Wrong, Gary. It USED to be a common market but after successive treaties it has become a few steps short of a federal republic!!

The banks should do what the Government often does…just ignore Brussels.

It was supposed to be a Common Market, not a United States of Europe dictating to the members.

If only it were, Steven, but you know better than that. Brussels has its oily fingers in every aspect of our lives and the sooner they don’t, the better! Did you see my link to the Marine Le Pen story in the Nigel Farage thread?
