See above! Not good for Hornby.

Sad news, indeed.
My local branches (Nottingham and Derby) have very helpful, knowledgeable staff. Two of the assistants in the Nottingham branch know me by name…Following TO23‘s shameless plug (;) ), a shameless endorsement from yours truly…
A few years ago, while passing, I called in to NAM. After a quick browse, I left with a 1:72 Convair B-36 under my arm. Bargain at £35.[Pedant Mode ON]
Shouldn’t that be “elusive”? :p

You’re quite right about elusive – I spotted it myself whilst preparing something for one of the Useful Information listings in here! It has now been added to the list of alts for when the long-overdue website update is completed!! 😉
Glad I achieved a result re your purchase – all the support we can secure ultimately benefits the collection! I’m told that yesterday some of the ‘Airshow Returnees’ had retained some funds to make a few purchases as well. 😎
On the downside apparently the Herpa Wings 1/500th scale civil aircraft items on a well-known Internet auction site aren’t attracting much interest – you win some you lose some!

As with Critter I used the Derby one, when the Mossie was on offer for £50 I called up to ask if in stock, they had one and asked my name and said they would hold it for me… Really helpful staff.

Modelzone was always a bit hit and miss for me. Airfix, Revell and Hasegawa? Nothing in between.

Plenty of stock here in the NAM Shop as well – hearing whispers that they’ve also started offering some of their Herpa Wings 1/500th scale civil aircraft items on a well-known Internet auction site!! :applause:

The Internet obviously has impacted but I don’t agree with the view that modelling is out of date, next time you are in WHSmith, check out the amount of modelling mags.
Modelling is booming, it just isn’t booming on the high street.
I still frequent several LMS’s but their stock is dwindling. Dorking Models seems to be doing well with plenty of stock to choose from.

This a great shame.
I took up modelling last year and live between the Croydon and Bromley branches.
Picked up the latest Tamiya Lanc for £79 back in May………..if my crystal ball had been serviceable I would have waited longer……….#tightwad
They are handy for an emergency modelling material (glue/paint/tools) and the odd bargain.
Hope for the sake of the staff something is sorted, the youngest staff will always get something but it is the older staff and the people forced back to work because of poorer than expected pensions I fear for.

D1566, I can’t speak for other stores, only what I’ve experienced and I wasn’t greatly impressed as such. The other staff there were okay though. Not saying they deserve to close down, but maybe others have found cheaper prices or better service elsewhere perhaps. Could be any number of reasons.
Hampden98, same here, purchased a few models online over the past year, generally cheaper than the shops and have always arrived in fine condition. 🙂

I’m never too critical of the staff in Modelzone. Sometimes you get a member of staff who knows about models, sometimes not.
There downfall is having to cater for such a wide variety of tastes. Is it a model shop, is it an RC shop, Die Cast, Sci-fi, Trains, Toys?
I tend to only buy my paints and glue there. Occasionally a model. Although I hate to say it I’ve been buying most of my models online.
Free postage too.
I did manage to snag £100 worth of Plasti Card for £15 during a sale!

I’m not surprised by this. When I went to purchase a model I asked if they had the British Airways landor livery DC10 by Gemini Jets and got the response ‘Is that a plane?’
I have always found the staff in their Liverpool and Chester stores helpful and knowledgeable; perhaps they misunderstood you? Even if not its hardly a reason for the whole chain to go to the wall is it?
