These can’t be true pet owners can they?
What’s the point of owning a pet if you don’t want to care for it? Isn’t that the point in pet ownership?
Personally I wouldn’t go on holiday if I couldn’t find someone to look after our pets.

I recently read a report of a dog, whoe’s owner had died, and been buried. The dog, even several years later, still goes to the grave and spends all day, lying on the grave.

Before we book our holiday we phone the cattery to make sure they can look after our cat on the dates we want, then we book the trip.

I was informed that my dog should not have been bought into France (where I now live) and so risked destruction, was very upset but decided that rather than risk the dog I would drive back to UK and leave the dog with my parents. Probably a 5-600 round trip Vs 25E to euthanize the dog. The thought of euthanasia never even crossed my mind let alone because Im going on holiday.
Fortunately the vet was in error she is allowed into France a simple mistake of breed classification.
I myself have had a healthy dog put to sleep and it still saddens me, the dog was badly tormented by children and so took a dislike to them unfortunately it went for the baby when it started to crawl
I struggle to comprehend how anyone can abandon a dog, a cat well they can look after themselves they are very independent creatures and quiet frankly over the years we have acquired several cats that abandoned their owners *. But a dog, a dog isn’t independent a dog is devoted to its master. For that person to tie up the dog then drive off I find heart wrenching, to think the confusion and sense of loss that the dog suffers.
* And the logic “oh instead of going to the nearest animal shelter I will drive miles down the motorway and then abandon my dog cat elephant”.
Just to clarify I don’t support abandoning cats or any animal at all especially since it takes little effort to drop it off at a shelter. I just feel that for a dog its worse because they are very much reliant on our company others may disagree.
Apologies for the rant.

There has never been a time in the last 50 yrs, when I got married, that I have been without two dogs. An Elkhound, and all the others, Bicheons. They are the best friends one could ever wish for, they give me greater pleasure than many humans I know. I confess, that most days, I put the recliner back, round about 3 pm. One of the dogs then lyes on my right side, the smaller, between my legs, we then, “Nod off” then at exactly at 4 pm, one of them licks my face, as if to say, “Wake up you old git” . I think that the most upsetting thing was that yrs ago, one of my dogs developed a tumour in it’s mouth. The Vet told me that a coarse of treatment would possibly cure it. £2.000 later we had to have her put to sleep, I held her, as she was put down, and tears rolled down my cheeks. I was taking her body home, to bury her in the garden, as I reached the Vets door, the Vet stated I still owed him £25.00 for having the dog put down. I later found out that they use out dated anaesthetic to do this.Bast**d. My dogs stay with one of my family when we go away, and when they go away, we look after theirs. As the old saying goes, “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas”. I agree it costs a lot in food to feed animals, but I would rather be skint than to have to part with mine.

My beef as well, if you work full time don’t have a dog!! .
I agree in principle, but in practice circumstances change.
My own Parents have 2 dogs work shifts so there are seldom times when there is nobody home, but on occasion the dogs are left for several hours, I personally think having the 2 mitigates this somewhat.
Dog walkers not an option for them as although generally very friendly dogs, the rotty in particular has negative views of people entering the house if my Parents aren’t in.

My neighbour used dog walkers as on occasion neither he nor his wife would be at home for a full day, the dog walkers used to go around at lunchtime thus giving the dogs human contact.
I personally try not to leave my dog more than an hour or so if I can possibly avoid it. In the south of France summer is not the time to go shopping with the dog.

Get a cat that will go and kill all the local wild life and birds. But that’s another subject.

I was told by a friends daughter who worked as a veterinary nurse some years ago that a young lad about 12 yrs old came in with a dog and asked for it to be put down. Questioned why by the vet as he was so young and the dog was healthy the lad told him his mother sent him in because it was cheaper to do this than pay kennels while they were would be away on holiday. When asked if he would be upset and miss his pet he said yes but his mother told him they could get another dog when they came home. The vet took the dog away to rehome it. He reported it to the authorities but I can’t recall the outcome. It beats me how some people can be so cold hearted. Our dog is very much part of the family and we arrange trips and holidays with her care our first prioity if we can’t take her with us.

Well maybe but people should accept that responsibility for them. Get up early and walk them!

Quite so – the same who have to find dog walkers as it’s inconvenient to walk them themselves!
At least the dogs have a walk and go home,i guess life is busy busy now.

They are not pet lovers.Pets are part of the family a BIG part.We plan our walking holidays around the pets.If we do go somewhere we can’t take them we have neighbours who look after them and we do vice versa.
Mind i speak from a household of 2 dogs,4 cats ,4 snakes, aquarium 🙂 and 2 teenagers -do they count LOL.
In a way i can understand pets being handed in responsibly if the owners genuinely cannot afford them after their personal situation changes but to spend out on a holiday and dump them, priorities wrong there.
