I guess the problem is we no longer manufacture the `big` items. Certainly not under British badges.
Cars, Planes, Ships, Fridges, TV’s etc. I’m not saying we don’t make them (Nissan cars), just not that visible.
I have a feeling this might end up as a `what have the Romans done for us` argument 🙂

UK manufacturing has been on a rising trend since the end of the war. True employment in manufacturing hasn’t, but that’s because of automation, slicker processes, better materials.

The above is a graph with the 100 index fixed at 2005. It doesn’t include Mr Brown’s recession, but as you can see from the earlier one, even after a fall in recession the upward trend resumes.
Just one example – more cars built in the UK now than ever there were in the days of Morris, Hillman and Rover.
