Afgan Farmers

Sometimes those not wrapped up in the problem can see things more clearly.

There were three things that struck me,

The US aided farmers and taught / aided farmers in Afghanistan to increase their crop yields to help feed their families, unfortunately they decided to grow drugs.

The Coalition should have then bought those drugs to use in legitimate pharmaceutical uses, thus depriving the Taliban of a major fund generator, whilst aiding those farmers, no matter how distasteful their crop.

The UK in Northern Ireland learnt early on to reduce the ammonia nitrate content of the fertiliser, thus rendering it in effective for use in the manufacture of IED’s, for some reason this appeared to be lost in the Afghanistan conflict and was only rectified recently, one would have thought early on that should have been identified and addressed, local fertiliser should have been purchased or replaced with safe fertiliser at say a 3 for two ratio, thus rendering the source of explosives ineffectual.

Come on it was New Labours best example of a failing economy being turned round by foriegn intervention.

Tony Blair said that one of the main reasons for intervening in Afganistan , was to deplete the Poppy harvest .

I think it was probably more than just one country and government involved.I am puzzled as to what Jimmy Page and Robert Plant JP Jones and John Bonham have to do with it though 🙂
