R.I.P. Frank Thornton

Captain Peacock has died,aged ninety-two.

One of those actors who was never a huge star, but was always a pleasure to watch.

Anybody got a favourite supporting actor who doesn’t get enough recognition ?

( I would use the term actress, but someone might be offended :diablo: ).

RIP Frank, I remember him in ‘IASW’ too! It’s a phenomenon of the modern world that we all ‘know’ people like Frank Thornton et al through their TV and film work and when they pass we feel it.

Talking about getting old I was reading the other day that Eric Clapton is going to stop touring when he’s 70….in two years time…

Oooh, yes! I’d forgotten that he worked with the amazing Michael Bentine.

He did a lot of ‘straight’ stage work, too.

He did indeed – highly regarded but largely unsung.

A slight drift but you might also recall that in addition to Frank Thornton this lot also appeared in IASW – Ronnie Barker, Clive Dunn, Dick Emery, Deryck Guyler, John Bluthal, Bob Todd, Benny Lee, Len Lowe and Joe Gibbons.

There goes another one. So many of the actors that I grew up with, have left this mortal coil, that its making me very conscious of my own mortality.

Richard Briers did that with me – sudden WOW oh i am getting old

I quite agree and as is so often the case he is remembered for one TV role, which set against the panoply of his theatre, TV and film work was a relatively insignificant element for him, as an actor.

My first memory of him – in It’s A Square World…

Sad news, indeed.

I always thought he was a very under-rated character actor, and he was more or less the only (intentionally) funny thing in the last few series of Last Of The Summer Wine.

I always likes Richard Wattis, Alastair Sim, Eric Sykes, and my two all time faves from that era, Margaret Rutherford, and Hattie Jacques. God Bless them all.

RIP Frank, and thanks for all the laughs!;)

Very sad to hear of him passing, I grew up with Are you being served and still feel very fond of the show. He was a great comic actor and part of a fine cast. Maybe he never was a huge star but he will be fondly remembered by many and 92 is a pretty fine age to bail out.

As to other supporting actors/actresses I would go with,

Sue Pollard- she lights up the screen with a mad energy in all the things she has done.
Annette Crosby- One foot in the Grave Victor’s wife Margaret

of the men
John Chalis- Boycie in Only Fools and Horses
Roger Lloyd Pack- Trigger in Only Fools and Horses
and the one who I always wonder what would of became is the late great Richard Beckinsale in Porridge and Rising damp he often stole the show.

Oh, that’s sad. A very talented, very amusing actor and as you say never a huge star. He was almost never out of work, and certainly played a lot more than “Captain Peacock”, but never topped the bill – like Richard Wattis in his day, for those who remember him.

June Whitfield, a comedy ACTRESS, I admire hugely, and who has worked consistently for 60 years, is probably in the same category. And there are many others I am sure…
