Red Nose Day

I am interested in peoples thoughts.
It seems to be such a “force ” now that you are almost an outsider if you don’t take part or donate.
My feelings are mixed-helping the needy fine but it is almost replacing what the taxes they take from us should be going to in this country.
In a short while it will be Children in need as well.

Alan. Didn’t one or two of the Medecins Sans Frontieres Drs/medics get murdered at one location they were working in?. Seems to ring a bell.

You may be right, I’m not sure.

The reasons they gave for pulling out of other locations, wasn’t so much for
their own security, but because the refugee camps were being taken over by
military factions.

Talking of charities

Rock philanthropist Bono, the frontman of U2, has come under attack after it was revealed that his anti-poverty foundation ‘ONE’ gives only one percent of it’s funds to charity.

The non-profit organisation set up by the Irish rock icon received almost 15 million in donations in 2008 but handed out only 190,000 to good causes, reported New York Post.

More than 50 percent of the funds, went towards paying salaries and ONE is now facing allegations of mismanagement and fraud.

There was an interesting programme on TV a little while ago, talking about
how very often, throwing aid into war torn countries can be counter productive.
So much so that organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, have pulled
out of a number of locations in the last few years.

We donate direct through our pay at work.Years ago representatives of these charities would come round and you could have money deducted directly.I haven’t seen anyone for years i really ought to check what is going where.

P.S I see alot of cash machines also link into charities now and online sales when you checkout also have options for adding to charities,i wonder how many do that instead.

Gary, If you make a purchase off Ebay, and use the Paypal method to pay, you have an option to donate to a Charity at the point of payment, Good idea if you want to donate.

It was your statement not mine.

Sheesh…..

I didn’t say we should STOP sending money to these war torn Countries, I asked the question WHY do we send it there, as I would say hardly any of it reaches those in need.
Side stepped the question nicely. didn’t you, Google my ar*e.

I avoid it like the plague, to commercial now and I would prefer to give to where I know it’s going, so I give any donations to this little girl, she runs her site and hoped to raise £7,000 for Mary’s Meals to feed a school for a year.

As you can see £130,000 she sort of blew that target into the dust.

Why make a statement yourself, then expect me to Google it.
The truth of the matter is, you just can’t substantiate the question yourself, can you?.

Re 40

You obviously haven’t heard of devolution. Ther countries that comprise the Yew Ky are all but self governing – just wait a little longer.

Great Britain for long; Britain for short. Much more euphonic – look it up.

John Green, You really don’t read what’s put in front of you. Go away, do some research of your own instead of expecting others to do it for you then come back and make an informed opinion. Or better still, just go away.

Oh by the way the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or UK for short. OK? It matters not what you prefer, that’s the name of the country. (I can’t believe you have even made point about the name of the flipping country now!)

Lincoln 7, Anyway, how do you know it doesn’t reach those it is intended for?

Prove to me it does reach those in need where there is a war going on.

Lincoln 7, Silly? You’re the one who suggested we don’t send money to places where civil wars are happening. I would suggest that they are the places that are in most need of help. Anyway, how do you know it doesn’t reach those it is intended for?

That’s a fair effort Scott. My daughter’s school had a dress-up as a monster day -I haven’t heard how much they raised yet.

just to lighten the mood somewhat, amidst the agree/disagree feelings on comic relief etc

this is what i did to raise some money (albeit not a great deal, but like tescos…every little helps)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/149166_613685245324290_1028027650_n.jpg

i also got my legs waxed too, along with another lad who had his legs and chest waxed

i then went down to the squadron to raise more money

as long as i feel Ive contributed to making someone else, who has chance to be poorer than me’s life better (even with the lack of funds i and my family have) then that is fine with me

Regards

[QUOTE=Derekf;2002561]

But you’re right about the civil wars though. We should stop sending money there and just the let the children die. Is that what you want?

Now your just being silly, and you know it!!.
Obviously I would like to see no one die in those places, but who gets the money we send them?, certainly NOT those it’s intended for.

I’m close to bringing out my usual rant that women don’t read properly.

My comment 22 is the one that refers. No mention of UK or, as I prefer Britain.
