So the government decided it was a good idea to reduce new officers pay by £4000. I’m sure that will help morale.. MP’s are certainly worth their 32% pay rise that they want eh :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Let’s not forget, we’re all in this together

Well the Services have to attain a basic fitness test every year based on age. Fail that and they can be history.
By: Lincoln 7 - 16th January 2013 at 19:35
Tony, Sorry, I don’t agree with your 10yr contract, it should be 5yrs, and that should include a fitness test, you don’t need me to tell you, that many are like Mr Blobby, and obviously unfit for purpose, ie, chasing a Criminal. In fact I would guess a lot would go off sick, just by having a go at “Musical Chairs”,
Jim.

I would like to see the police also on renewable contracts of say 10 years where the dross can be let go.
Totally agree with Pongoes wages, they should be higher than those of a comparable plod.

No worries.

When I say fascists I was refering to the money men/bankers/usurers/power brokers/media reptiles who really decide which group of equally dismal politicians pretend to operate the levers of power.
I have no intention of entering into a debate on their relative merits with you or anyone else, as they are all equally cr*p in my opinion–and care even less about which side you support.
It doesn’t matter if the name is Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown or the current two tw*ts, they’re all just a front for the same group.
The Police have been used for decades (if not forever) to enforce the aims of the same group.I care not
Sorry, I misunderstood what you had said.
But I completely agree with everything you’ve said.

These “fascists” we’re doing a great job until ’97, that’s when the rot set in. In two terms, the Socialists have brought us to the brink of bankruptcy.

Well I would think the filf are well p*ss*d off.
After they do the political bidding of the bunch of fascists who run the country for the last thirty odd years–and in the process lose the support/confidence of the majority of normal folk, they then get stabbed in the back by the same politicians/money men.
My heart bleeds to be honest.

I haven’t got any time for the current lot, but they’re certainly better than the clowns on the other side.
Tbh I don’t think the pay cut is enough, why should the starting salary of a Policeman or teacher be more than a soldier?
Public services do not generate any money for the country, and so it is only right that they bear the brunt of austerity. This is tragic, but it is the world we live in, not some looney fantasy that the leftists have, where everyone can be wealthy and equal.

Yeah I’m not sure I like the idea of riding a bike around when on duty in the future. I’d prefer to be on foot.
That’s really generous of you to do that for the postman. If only more people were like you the world would be a much nicer place.
By: Lincoln 7 - 16th January 2013 at 09:55
Ash, As regards Police on bicycles. There was a great HooHaa, when the nick next door took 2 cycles to add to their fleet, the local rags photographer was there, and at the time everyone thought it was a good idea.
I have only seen them riding them twice.
I don’t expect to see them at this time of year, as it’s 4 degs F below at the moment, however, having said that, our trusty old, and he is old, Postman, rides his bicycle all weathers, all year round. If I catch him as he delivers my mail, I have him in for a while, and give him a hot drink:).
It’s surprising just what I get to hear from him, as to what’s going on around the town.
A lesson the Police could well learn.
Jim.

It’s ashame that it’s like that up there. I think that now the Specials and PCSO roles are seen as stepping stones to becoming a full PC (As you know that’s my intended route too) I think the new recruits and being made to go that route more so now possibly as a way to weed out time wasters that train up as a full PC and find they dislike the job.
Do PCSO’s have cars? I’ve only ever seen them on bikes down here. I see them quite regularly. I do agree though, rarely see PC’s on foot. I used to see the mounted police constables regularly in the Central Milton Keynes but I haven’t even seen one of them since around 2010.
By: Lincoln 7 - 15th January 2013 at 23:50
Ash, In all honesty, I cannot remember the last time I ever saw one, perchance even years ago.
They had to put in “X” number of hours per month, and to be frank, (But call me Jim :)) they were bug***d about so much, they dwindled down to just two, and they were husband and wife, so went out on patrol together.
We now have PCSOs, and Community Police, both however have their own (Police marked cars/van), but you never see them on foot patrol.
What Joe Bloggs wants to see are less bums on seats, and more feet, pounding the beat.
Public confidence would soar, and they would also give the Police more support.
By all means, go out in the cars, but park up in town, village and City, get out and walk, the streets, many a time I have done this, and people would walk up to me, and say, something like, “Jim, you know that burglary that took place down XXXX Street the other night?, just go and have a word with so, and so” You can’t expect the public to flag a car down as it speeds through town to impart that/other sort of info, not these days, their first job and priority has to be to regain public confidence in them. I am sorry to say, the Police have only themselves to blame.
Jim.

Jim, has many specials packed it in up there? Down here, TVP has had such a positive outcome with apps to join the specials that their recruitment for it has been closed for nearly a year as they train up the new recruits.
By: Lincoln 7 - 15th January 2013 at 20:24
Yes, I only read that today, in our local rag. It’s nothing more than wanting something for nothing. Who in their right mind would walk the streets, (Tonight it’s already 1 deg below freezing) alongside A.N. Other who is getting paid?.
That’s one of the reasons Special Constables packed it in.
I was under the impression, that at the end of the day, it’s the C.C. who had the final word.
He talks the talk, but can he Walk the Walk?

Jim, I see our new police commisioner is suggesting there should be volunteers to step into the breach locally… not quite sure how that would work.. 😮

Re Kev, thread 2. I agree, having done my 30yrs, there were not all that many times I was in harms way, like the members in the Army I think there should at least be parity with the Police, and when engaged in conflict overseas, they should get more, as do the Americans. I would guess there are very many folk, who would work for far less than the 18 Grand the new recruits will get, just to get off the dole, and get employed, rather than sitting at home doing sweet F/A.
As usual, just my opinion.
Jim.

why will it affect morale, doesnt affect those already employed ?
those who apply for jobs with ‘experience’ (ie a couple of years as Plastic Plod/Laptops) will start on £22000. Currently there is no shortage of applicants for the few jobs that there are, so the reality is that most new recruits will fit into the ‘experienced’ bracket so no real change to the current situation…
By: charliehunt - 15th January 2013 at 19:26
I entirely agree with your comments about the ludicrous disparity between Service and Police starting pay. And with the £4000 reduction the police pay is still higher than the service pay.
Having said that every recruit is aware of the terms and conditions and each makes their own choice. It was reported tonight that police recruitment is over-subscribed. In the current climate I imagine that Service recruitment cannot afford to be over-subscribed.
By: kev35 - 15th January 2013 at 18:57
In 2012, seven Police Officers died. Of these, only three died as a result of their actual employment. Tragic as their deaths are, the current starting pay for a Police Officer is £23,000.
Compare that with the pay of a Private in the British Army. Starting at £17,265, they face 6 month tours of duty in harms way resulting, in 2012, in the deaths of 39 of them due to enemy action. Many more are disabled as a result of their injuries.
If there is a National outcry then surely it should be because a Private soldier in the British Army is expected to, if necessary, give his life in the Service of this Country for almost £6,000 a year less than a Police Constable, who clearly has a greater expectation of reaching retirement than a squaddie.
Yes, I’m sure there will be those who suggest that those joining the Army know all about the pay and conditions before they enter. The same is true for those entering the Police Service too.
Regards,
