Belfast and the Union Flag

Some 40 years ago I was part of Operation Banner. I can’t help remembering burning buses, stoning, petrol bombing, baton rounds and mindless idiot children roaming the streets, and Police/Prison Officers checking their cars for bombs.
Fast foward to last night and many recent nights. So whats changed?
All the murdering scum are out of jail and in politics or are respectable citizens(ha). I don’t tar all Irish with the same brush there are good and bad on both sides of the divide but those who have seeked to continue an arguement that has gone on for hundreds of years have no place in the 21st Century. If we can be friends with the Germans and Japanese after 70 years why in Gods name can’t the Irish put History in its place and move on.
Back to the Union Flag Ulster, Northern Ireland call it what you will is British and the flag should fly as long as the majority want it. Whoever the idiot who proposed the new rule is ,I hope he/she is proud of what they have now achieved!

[QUOTE=paul178;1974554]Jim, In answer to your question

http://allianceparty.org/article/2013/006960/frequently-asked-questions-about-the-recent-vote-on-the-union-flag-at-belfast-city-council

Here is a compromise:p

What about a compromise, one flag, one half displaying the Union flag, the other half, the Tricolour?, and let it fly 365 days a year?.

No, I guess not, that’s too simple.
I think they have painted themselves into a corner on this one.One would think that the troubles in Ireland, which has been going on for decades, would be the thing they would want to put behind them, and move forward.
Having said that I think that the riots etc, has become a way of life, for many, and will continue for decades to come.
But as usual, that’s just my opinion.

If that’s the case it’s the total insensitivity to the symbolic importance of that “piece of rag” which speaks volumes. I hope the repercussions are not as extreme as you suggest but whoever made the decision has a great deal to answer for!!

It’ll be a couple of people stirring this all up, the flag is simply an excuse, totally agree though one persons decision may have totally derailed the country over a bit of rag. Tourists will stay away, industry will stay away or pull out again, old hatreds will reopen wounds and in a recession the country will lurch from one disaster to another…. So sad to see so much hard work ruined by a couple of individuals. I too was part of Banner.

That’s is correct and confirms its governance as being a partially devolved parliament of the British Isles, as is Scotland and to a lesser extent Wales. In constitutional terms it owes its allegiance to the Crown.

Indeed Mogs, believe the correct term is- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

As to the latest round of insanity, they should all wake up & smell the coffee, there are far more important things to squabble over these days & if they don’t get their heads & a$$’s wired together, it’ll be too late.

It’s a totally artificial situation. The indigenous Irish Catholics were purposely outnumbered/outvoted by the British government by settling tens of thousands of mainly Scottish Protestant immigrants in the area, hence all the Mc surnames.
Things can only get worse as Scottish independence looms closer – the ‘Brits’ in Northern Ireland will begin to feel very threatened and exposed, and will react accordingly.

This is stupidity the Union flag has been flown peacefully for a few years now and the majority want it to fly it seems. So by taking it away all the efforts of the past for peace are put in jeopardy.
I do not approve of the riots or civil unrest but I can see why unionists are more than a bit peeved at the moment.

Honestly I feel let the union flag fly as it has done for so long and stop this violence before Northern Ireland slides back 30 years.

Paul178.
Paul, they do say History has a habit of repeating it’self, perhaps that’s what the idiot who proposed it wanted to happen.
Who did?.
