UK Military gets Glocks !!

No recession in the armaments industry ….The UK military has just purchased 25,000 Glock 17 Automatic pistols along with holsters & 17 round mags . The cost of this ?? £ 9,000,000 . The guns are made in Austria & the procurment contract goes to an armaments company in Harrogate .

Not sure of how they will dispose of all the surplus Browning autos they are replacing ?

Nothing wrong with the Browning High Power – and it’s still very sought after among US gun collectors!

Never said there was – it worked for me for many years. I’d have one tomorrow if our laws permitted – I know it inside out and could still do the IA drills in my sleep…

Browning is owned ultimately by GIAT, the French equivalent of Royal Ordnance.

There is a Browning plant and offices at Herstal in Belgium.

Weren’t the Brownings made by Belgians, along with the SLR and GPMG that I remember so fondly? Far more reliable and of far higher build quality than our very own Sterlings and the SA80 system (I bust 7 of the latter from memory, never any of the first 3).

JB.

And some are to be equipped with the new 50cal, as demonstrated on one of your TV progs the other week. The shooting damage at targets was awesome.
Think it was made by Smith and Wesson?.

For the last 15 years, US Forces have used Berettas…Italian design, but made in the U.S. They were fun to shoot and i had much better luck with those during my semi-annual sidearm qualification tests.

It replaced 38s..(I don’t know who made those..Browning? Colt? Smith & Wesson?).

However, I’ve recently read that some units wil be reequipped with new versions of the classic Colt 1911 45 cal….for more stopping power than the 9mm.

There’s some holes in Burma which will pretty soon need filling. Perhaps they can be buried there?

Pretty sure they will be sold to someone who will try and shoot at the people who recently acquired some Glocks………

I found the Browning heavy and cumbersome in use when I was in Aunty Betties Flying Club compared to some of the newer Gucci Pistols.

Glad the old warhorse is being put out to grass for a more useful weapon that will be better for the boys in the field with larger round capacity and quicker fire reaction times…

Answers the problem of where to get rid of the old inventory then doesn’t it? They’ll buy anything.

Having used both, there is genuinely no comparison. Good call as the military finally follow the police for whom the Glock has been the sidearm of choice for many years.

The Browning has been around since the mid 1930’s – there are modern pistols these days to equip/protect our troops. They no longer use the Lee Enfield .303, so why expect them to use a sidearm from the same era!

As for the surplus Brownings – sell/give them to the Afghan Army?
