Comp help needed.

My Laptop is running Windows Vista, however the “C” drive is nearly filled. As such, I was treated to a new Laptop for Christmas running Windows 8.
Can I use a USB Flash reader to transfer files from Windows Vista to Windows 8?.If so, what size would be the most useful, say to transfer Adobe Photoshop.
and other largish files.I can’t seem to find the answer, anywhere.
Thanks for any help.

Jim.

there is on the old Lappy a port with HDMI on it, is this what you mean

HDMI is a ‘display out’ port, so that you can connect your lappie to a television to display stuff on screen.

Ethernet ports look like this

Computer memory of any type, buy the most you can afford. 64Gb is pretty cheap now. (Under £30). Do check if the new lappie has the 3.0 USB, if so buy the appropriate flash drive, it will be much faster.

The second bit worries me. You won’t be able to transfer actual prorams (such as Photoshop) by this method. They will have to be installed from the original discs.

Moggy

Thanks Moggy, just ordered a memory stick off Amazon, (Via a gift card given to me at Christmas). Will have to go on a Safari, to hunt down the discs, for some of the other things I would like to swap over.
Thank you for your help.

Bmussed55.

Sorry to be so ignorant, but there is on the old Lappy a port with HDMI on it, is this what you mean, ie short length of cable?.
Thanks for the input.

If both PCs have an ethernet port, then get a short length of cable, network them and transfer the files that way. Easy peasy 🙂

As for programs, Moggy is right, they will need to be installed.

Charlie. I have had this L/P for several yrs, at the same time, I also, like yourself, purchased an external H/Drive, it’s up in the loft, somewhere:confused:
Which is why I just need to know about the USB flash drive.
Thanks for the suggestion though 🙂

I’ll leave you to the good Doctor but I just wonder if there would be enough memory on the flash drive….Good luck, anyway!:)

Linc – I probably don’t know any more than you but when I transferred all my pictures and files to a new laptop a couple of months ago I used a 500GB portable harddrive and it was a very easy transfer. I use it as my backup anyway so it was no problem.
