Acquiring a new number plate for the car

I write this just in case it happens to someone else.

My daughter left her car with me whilst she was away for 4 months with RAF and would non-contactable for most of that time. She left ensuring the tax and insurance were valid for the period, so no problem. Well, not quite.
As I was between cars at the time, her car naturally was welcome and, with me added to the insurance, I did use it.
After returning to the car in a car park one day, I find the front number plate in pieces on the floor; only the two plastic screws remained holding remnants of said number plate. I drove straight to Halfords who declined to make a new one for me. I explained the situation, showed my “picture type” driving licence but my request was still declined as they need the log book, a passport/licence of the owner and a utility bill to confirm address. I explained the stuation again but to no avail.
On returning home I contacted DVLA who informed me that they do not control this piece of regulation and gave me a phone number to call. Speaking to what sounded like a young lady and explaining fully my plight, she replied….you know what is coming; I need a passport/driving licence, utility bill……….. I explained again and that if I could not get a new number plate the car was effectively “off the road”. Sorry, she said, no way around this.
After peeing in the wind with DVLA again and getting nowhere, I actually gave up with them. However, at home I managed to purchase a new number plate on the web. It cost no more that a Halfords one (incl P&P) and actually came from Eire. It arrived 2 days later and I was back mobile again. No forms or paperwork required.
What a system we have!!!

You could always make your own temporary plate.
As long as it’s the required size, font, spacing it should be legal.
Mind you with the amount of dodgy custom plates around I doubt the old bill care.

Something similar happened to a colleague of mine.

The police got things moving quite quickly.

Quite standard now im afraid. Even as a garage we cant get number plates made up for customers anymore for MOT failures etc. Even when they are elderly

You may have had better treatment, had you gone to your local nick, and asking a Bobby to contact the Police Liason officer at DVLA. after all it was a crime, ie Criminal Damage, and as such, may have helped you better.

Just for future reference if needed.

I never bother with the official channels any more.

I simply Google ‘Show Plates’ and buy direct.

Useful heads-up though
