Surprising really, when most Cruise ships are fitted with stabilisers, The seas can change from dead calm to storm conditions in very short notice, No doubt the Captain decided to take it head on, or that he turned and broached, which made thing worse. At what I have seen, hopefully only minor injuries may have been sustained.
You can’t beat Mother Nature.

That wasn’t a ferry to Shetland, it was a Pacific Sun Cruiseliner which was in a storm at sea. The video is all over the internet. There is another video from below decks, showing equipment getting flung around and some water (not much, just splashes) working its way through cargo door seals.
There is also another video from another angle on the same ship I think, you sea people eating in a dining room and steadily the rocking gets more and more pronounced until it resembles the video above.

No idea. What I know about boats and the sea can be written on the back of a very small motion discomfort bag.

What I mean is why does what appear to be a modern passenger ship suddenly, and it would appear without warning, suddenly get tossed around like that. Freak wave perhaps? Surely if a ship was heading into bad weather it would have stowed all the loose stuff?

I’m guessing – waves
