Over the last few weeks, my laptop, has closed the window I am looking at.
The screen changes to a purple colour and the writing, in white, states, “He’s dead Jim”, underneath that, is other writing, but it goes off screen in a flash, and it’s gone before I can read it.
Anyone any ideas as to what causes this?.
I have Virus scanned etc, but all seems O.K.
Anyone any ideas?.
Jim.

True, Rob, but then Firefox is great at keeping you up to date, at least they pulled the new version before it was too late. Mine keeps itself up to date and I’ve just checked and I have V.15.
CC Cleaner is ok, a great program, but you can delete things that shouldn’t necessarily be deleted. I’ve gone through it’s self creating list on many occasions and unticked things it shouldn’t be deleting.

If you don’t already have it, download a free copy of CC Cleaner.
It helps you get rid of lots of unwanted clutter.

Jim
I would never want paying for it. If you’re willing to courier it to me and back then I will take a look at it for you.
Another note about Firefox Browser. I’ve been running it for years and I have never, ever had a virus or any malware or spyware since running it. My system has been super clean since.
99.9% of viruses are designed and created to infiltrate your system through Internet Explorer, and this particular browser was always hitting my system with crap.

Dean. Thanks for trying to help, I would love, (And pay you) to sort it out.
Any suggestions as to how this may be viable?.

Jim, just a tiny overview:
Hard disk (HDD)
It won’t help. Your Hard Disk is made up of tiny “sectors”. Over time, and as you install and delete things your programs will become fragmented, in other words, split into pieces. This causes access times to be increased because it has to “search” for each segment of the program to run which can degrade system performance. Hard disk sectors can, and do become corrupted or damaged over time, leaving them useless. If you have an important bit of a program installed on one of these bad sectors then that program may not run, or if it does it may crash. Eventually as the Hard disk breaks down it will just fail (not very common, but happens).
Virtual Memory
As for virtual memory, this could be one of your issues if programs like Chrome are crashing alot. This will be caused by a full, or nearly full HDD (Hard Drive). You can increase the size of your virtual memory, but this is pointless if your HDD is nearly full. Virtual memory is something your system will use instead of your physical memory (RAM) once all the RAM has been utilised. If you have loads of processes running in the background then your PC is more than likely running out of physical memory (RAM) and is using Virtual Memory (space on your HDD). The best thing to do when this happens is to purchase more RAM (you can never have enough RAM), shut down some running processes, or delete files from your HDD and allocate some more Virtual Memory.
Web Browsers
Personal choice here, but by far and away the best browser out there is Mozilla Firefox. It is amazingly customisable, you can have all your favourite websites in tabs across the top of your browser, you can install brilliant add-ons like Spell Checker, and a great one called lazarus. Have you ever typed a long reply on this forum, or an email only to lose the lot? Lazarus will recover it for you – priceless. You can backup and save your bookmarks, you can save and access your passwords for websites. It is simply brilliant.
Jim
It sounds like your PC needs a damn good overhaul and clean out. I bet you have so many applications running in the background that need sorting out as well. PCs are like humans, you need to keep on top of their health to keep them in good running order.
How many icons do you have on your desktop? It is said that these alone use up 1mb of virtual memory per icon.
If I lived near you I could take your pc away and give it the once over.
Rgds

For what it’s worth I cahnged from IE to Chrome about two years ago, maybe longer, and have never looked back. I do use Firefox on another PC from time to time but it is all down to personal preference I suppose. You will find as many antis as pros for each on here….glad it doesn’t sound serious anyway.
Hi Charlie, Seems like Dean has put my mind at rest, at least you and I can continue to air our differing opinions.:D
Your all a good bunch of chaps, we fall out, then fall back in again.
But all come to the help of fellow members, such as now.

Just saw your replies above, Jim. This screen is NOT a virus, it’s just Google Chrome’s new way of having a hissy fit. This could be for a number of reasons, like it’s managed to get corrupted, or you have run out of virtual memory, or it has crashed because you didn’t close it before shutting down your PC.
The fact that it said He’s Dead Jim must have thrown you, but it is nothing to worry about.
Dean
Dean. I have very little available space left on my “C” disc, could this be the probable cause?.

Hi Dean, Thanks for that, I can now breath a sigh of relief, however, I cannot get IE, I would like your, and others opinion as to which is the better of the two.
But I do miss all the things I had on my IE browser bar, which I have not on Google.
Guess it’s me being thick,

That “personalised message” speaks nasty gremlin infection, but many here will know more than me….good luck!
Thanks Charlie, I am sure the lads on here are more comp literate than I.
I felt rather stupid having to ask my 16 yrs old Grandson to try and sort it out, he is studying I.T. but all he could do was to change from IE to Chrome, at least I can still get on line.
Just aint no fun getting older:D

I had a similar thing with a blue screen and a white flash message ‘Oops etc’. This was on AOL and access to the web site was denied. This happens because AOL did not support the progarm I was tring to open which was Ancestry UK. Switching to IE, no problems at all.
This is exactly the same words I got on IE, stating that page ??? could not be found. So it appears this may well be a common thing on all the better sites most frequented by users.

Alan. Thanks for the advice, and I will give it a try, I would love to be able to read ALL the writing, shame I can’t “Freeze” frame it.Yes, I am using Google chrome.
I was on IE, but when the bottom bar was filled up, stating the sites I had been on, IE froze up. and I couldn’t get back on line, my Grandson changed it from IE to Chrome, thinking about it, thats when this message started to appear.

It’s worth seeing if there’s anything in startup.
Click on start (bottom left), in the box at the bottom or in “Run”, type msconfig. Then select startup. See if there is anything ticked which you don’t recognise.
You can actually un-tick most of what is there. Apart from the files needed to run windows.
Also try running your anti virus in safe mode.
If you type the message you get into Google, there should be a solution there.
Are you using “Google Chrome” ?
