Private to airliner

Can airliners be designed from private planes?

Designing private planes from airliners is easy. Examples include Boeing Business Jet, Airbus Corporate Jetliner, Embraer Legacy and a plenty of custom conversions.

Has the opposite ever been done?

I think the only cases where you’ll see that is with small cabin recip./turboprop twins. There are a few airlines operating C402’s and C414’s but the argument could be made that those aircraft were originally designed for such operations whether they be private or public.

Now that I think of it there is one that I would consider an honest conversion from a private aircraft to airline, the Beechcraft 1300. The 1300 originally was a KingAir 200 but modified with a belly cargo bay.

Pilatus PC12s were designed as executive prop aircraft, and there are several of them being used commercially in North America, although they are banned from doing so over here. You get the ocassional outfit using King Airs for a similar purpose over here too.

Cant really think of anyone using Biz Jets like a Gulfstream or a Citation though?

The Canadair CRJ series is based on the Canadair Challenger exec jet, albeit with a lot of modifications. Also the Gulfstream I was designed as an executive aircraft, but has been used all over the world as an airliner. In particular they were used on Scheduled services out of Birmingham many years ago, I THINK it was Birmingham Executive but perhaps someone with a clearer memory of that time could confirm that..or was it after merging with Brymon??
