I flew these for a now defunct company on a freight service Durban to Johannesburg. “Mike Juliet Pig” and “Mike Juliet Swine” :highly_amused:

I scanned some pictures from my first flying job at Namib Air, now Air Namibia, in the 1980s

Thanks for the info, I will have a closer look next time I am there!

BTW S9 is SAO TOME. The planes I flew for TransAfrik were registered there. Our boss, Erich Koch, used to fly to and from the USA on a DC-10, maybe it’s the same one.

The DC-10 is certainly S9-GAP ex G-DPSP and was withdrawn from service in 2005 and stored at Jo’burg. Well traveled, it aspired to registrations in six different countries.

Of course it is a DC-10 and FedEx wouldn’t have any windows, but that tail colour is almost FedEx at first look!

EDIT. It is definitely a ‘MyTravel’ aircraft from the UK!

Thanks for sharing the photos, I suppose the Carvair isn’t knocking about at Joburg anymore?

The Carvair is still there as of today……didn’t have my other camera so this came off my entry level mobile phone.

I will have to go round to the flight schools and see what’s available. I could put my name down at the charter companies as another option, I have a King Air type rating and qualified as instructor on it too. It’s fun to buzz around the Okavango swamps and the game reserves with rich tourists, but there is other charter flying I wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot bargepole. This was a favorite trip back in the 1980s 😀

Thanks newforest, just googled them. Very interesting, there’s a fair few Q400 operators in Africa now.

I think it’s Togo, Ralf.
Thanks mate, hate doing type ratings, particularly at my age, but it is an amazing machine, system logic is superb, it’s also a lazy pilot’s aeroplane, I’m amazed at what it can do, even compared to the Airbus.
That’ll be good to get that back, what are you looking to teach?

I think they are based in Nigeria. Congrats on the 195! A nice plane by all accounts. The 727 has been in for a C Check so I’ve been on the ground. I am getting my instructor rating in order again so I can do instruction when I am idle as I am at the moment.

One for Deano

Ralf. Only just seen these, interesting pics. Who are Asky? Haven’t heard of them before. I’ll Google them.
I’ve moved on from the Q400 now mate, I’m on the dizzy heights of the Embraer 195, I’m just on my type conversion at the moment, the mach numbers and higher flight levels will give me a nose bleed, haha.
Hope you’re well. How’s the 27 treating you?

I think the word ‘storage’ might by slightly optimistic. There were several in Nigeria (?) grounded and abandoned.

I believe there were up to nineteen aircraft ‘stored’ at Benin City.
