And it would be interesting to know who supplied the means by which the Argentinian junta achieved what it did…
The ‘means’? Well, just about everybody lent Argentina money and the Junta forgot to pay about £50 billion of it back.
The weapons for the Falklands War came from many sources; between embargos: America, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Israel, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium; the weapons for the ‘disappearances’, well, that is more about inclination than ‘means’.

Why hold Isreal to a higher standard than anyone else?
Because Israel are the ‘good guys’, right? Actually I wasn’t trying to hold Israel to a higher standard; just something approximating the same standard but this should apply to every nation surely?
Do you reaklly think the UN, UK, NATO or the EU would help Isreal if bad stuff starts to happen?
They don’t need to because the US has, and will always, step in to protect their ally.
Anyway, as I said, this isn’t the discussion I set out to have. 🙂

Poles apart.
The inhabitants did not want to be ruled by the country who had made 30,000 people ‘dissappear’ over the previous few years. (and they still don’t now)
And I dare say the Palestinians feel the same way. And it would be interesting to know who supplied the means by which the Argentinian junta ‘achieved what it did

And what about self-determination?
That only goes so far.
Let’s let the people of the world vote on where they want to live….
Half of North Africa would go to France
Half of Eastern Europe would go to the UK
Half of the Chinese would be in Canada
and Half of Mexico would go to the USA….(not to mention the other half of Cuba going to Miami)…
I’ll take a luxury flat in Stockholm….and a winter place in Monaco.
Ready for that? :diablo:
How many visitors can your guest room accomodate? 😀
The fact remains Isreal controls the desputed territory…which it “won” fair and square….similar to other parts of the world held by other nations.
Why hold Isreal to a higher standard than anyone else?
Get Russia out of the Kurils and China out of Tibet…then we’ll talk.
If you want to make a blanket “self determination” rule for the world…good luck with that. Let’s see China and Russia propose that in the UN.
Isreal is alone in a tough neighborhood…asking it to give up some of its territory and security is easy to do if you’re not living there.
Do you reaklly think the UN, UK, NATO or the EU would help Isreal if bad stuff starts to happen?

No, but the fact that the UK claims the islands…won in a war.
Just like Isreal won the claimed lands in a war.
Poles apart.
By the way, we didn’t start the war in the Falklands, we retrieved it after somebody else invaded it.
The inhabitants did not want to be ruled by the country who had made 30,000 people ‘disappear’ over the previous few years. (and they still don’t now)

Don’t remember us slaughtering the Falkland Islanders bit.
No, but the fact that the UK claims the islands…won in a war.
Just like Isreal won the claimed lands in a war.
The big question isn’t about slaughtering anyone, it’s land ownership as a result of war.
If you want Isreal to give up land, logic dictates that you’d want the UK and other nations to give up land similarly won.
Good for the goose and all….

Won in a war, yes? Rather like the Falklands….?
What?? Nothing like the (present day) Falklands!
If you asked the Falkland Islanders if they’d rather have the British forces ‘occupying’ the islands almost all would say ‘yes’..
…I doubt you’d get the same response from the residents of the West Bank (Israeli settlers aside).
This isn’t the discussion I set-out to have; I don’t have anything against Israel, or anything for Syria, but I just wanted to point-out the partisan nature of the (rather strange) original post.

People who live in territory claimed by Israel…..yes!
Won in a war, yes?
Rather like the Falklands….?
or is Russia going to give the Kuril Islands to Japan?
There are dozens of lands claimed by dozens of other countries worldwide.
I”m not taking sides, just pointing out something….read my statement below.
Obama and the US isn’t going to do anything, he seems to like Islamist “leaders”.
He’ll give the Syrians as much help as he gave the Iranian pro-democracy demonstrators. He only joined the Libya effort because of NATO.

Are the Israelis slaughtering thousands of their own people?
People who live in territory claimed by Israel…..yes!

attack Iran first, but no government except Israel has the balls to do it atm.

When did it become ‘no problem’ for the UK to promote ‘regime-change’ in Syria? William Hague announced the other day that the UK was doubling (non military ) ‘aid’ to the political opposition in Syria; isn’t that promoting regime-change?
I seem to remember, probably before the second Gulf War, that the UK definitely didn’t want to be seen getting involved in that sort of thing? Following the ‘successful’ (western supported / promoted) regime-changes in Libya and Egypt is this sort of thing now (openly) acceptable?
Would William Hague think it proper if, say, Saudi Arabia made a massive donation to the Labour Party?

That would achieve nothing, other than making an emasculated ‘superpower’ feel better for a short while:rolleyes:
And a similar strike against Israel?
You’ve more chance of plaiting fog than seeing that;)
