Clive DuCros has brought his replica back to the attention of the world with a new website: http://www.spitfireprototype.com
According to the site, there is a new, updated, version of his book, “Birth of a Spitfire”, plus a DVD!

I have always put this one in a special catergory as it is a completely authentic external shape. The original book was entertaining and liberally punctuated with “and then we went down to the pub”, Clive obviously appreciates his local brew.

So did I – apparently the newer one has chapters about the aircraft’s accidents.
There was a story about Clive pulling the plans of the aircraft after an American builder told him he planned on bunging an Allison into his one and Clive, sensing a possible lawsuit from the chap’s family should he pile into the earth rather spectacularly, pulled the plug.
Amazingly enough, the Spitfire Aircraft Company is building an Allison-powered version. The recent Classic Wings article makes mention of this.
