Afghanistan,Yorkshire Regt

6 More of our brave lads have been killed by a roadside bomb, do members think that our lads and lassies serving over there will ever make a difference?.
And, should we, could we pull out now?.250 lads from the same Regt are going out in April.

Andy, You and your son was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news. I must admit I was relieved when I heard it was not his regiment but guilty in thinking that at the same time because of the families devestated by this.

The news was a very personal ‘jolt’ for me whilst away on a week-long break.

I dropped my son off at Brize Norton for his return to Afghanistan about ten days ago after his mid-tour R&R and one of the first ‘ops’ he was on was this one. He knew some of those killed (though is from the Queens Royal Hussars) and was involved the next day in recovering the vehicle and casualties.

I have had news via his girlfiend that he was (is) very shaken, especially at the damage to the Warrior and its occupants. He drives a Warthog, a far less substantial vehicle.

Thus far, he has lost one friend and whilst on R&R visited regimental mates in Birmingham hospital who have lost limbs. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased, of course, and the news sends ice cold water through our veins whenever something like this happens.

Utterly futile. And yet some “news” sources are today more pre-occupied with Cheryl Cole’s big hair-do failure and that some talentless nobody boy band member ‘almost died’ in an underwater filming accident. How tragic. And how desperately tragic that such s**t is even of any passing interest or concern to anyone.

In May 1915, after a particularly bad day in the Ypres salient, a young Canadian medical officer sat on the tail board of an ambulance and wrote a few lines of poetry.
I won’t trouble you with the whole poem but the last few lines go like this…

“If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”

Perhaps the politicians (and the rest of us) should keep that thought.

Andy.

[QUOTE=Blue_2;1866019]THEY don’t want another Vietnam. But they’re quite happy to leave our guys with it… 😡

Nail, Head, you got it in one Graham. I said from the very start it would be our Vietnam, one thing though, we know who our friends are, pitty Cameron and Co don’t.

Young Scott. Have you noticed that the Country that, (Once again) dragged us into this conflict has pulled nearly all IT’S troops out?.

They had only be in country for a month. A sad loss and I wonder how much more we have to lose before the penny drops that Afghanistan is a lost cause……

I will support the men and women on the ground with my last breath but the fools who send them are the same as the “donkeys” who ‘led’ the “lions” during WW1….

RIP brave lads…

Paul178. I agree with what you say, the only thing that bothers me is what Phantom 11 has put on the forum re Iran, I just hope that if America sticks it’s nose in, (Again:rolleyes:) they don’t drag us into yet another theater of war, that we as a small Island cannot afford, and with more than overstreached resources we don’t have.

My view has not changed since day one. Our Forces should not be there or have been in Iraq. I want them home. This is not meant to devalue them or what they have tried to do. I SUPPORT OUR FORCES. not the war. It breaks my heart to see them die or have life changing injuries.Where did that saying come from anyway? The word is maimed but that sounds more serious to our political masters!
