RIP Philip Madoc

Probably best known to a certain generation as the U-Boat commander in Dad’s Army, Welsh actor Philip Madoc died today aged 77. As well as a film and television actor Madoc was also a linguist and worked as an interpreter.

He will however probably be best known to some of us for one of the stand-out comedy moments of the 70’s.

Certainly an all round actor and multi linguist. A fitting obituary. 🙂

Also remember him from The Life and times of David Lloyd George. Former husband of Ruth (hi-de-hi) Madoc, of course.

On a side note – why was the Mohican haircut so called? .

because the mohican haircut is incorrectly named it is actualy a mohawk and was never an actual indian hair style !! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohawk_hairstyle

Was listening to the 5 o’clock news on Radio 2 earlier when the newsreader mentioned the death of Flip Madoc, even mentioning Last of the Mohicans it wasn’t until he mentioned Dad’s Army that I realised who he was talking about – whatever happened to BBC English?

On a side note – why was the Mohican haircut so called? From memory of the film and tv series, this haircut was worn by the Hurons. Chingachgook was the last of the Mohicans and his hair resembled that of a hippie, not a punk.

It’s a bit like David Kelly being mainly remembered for Mr. O’Reilly in Fawlty Towers, some of these fine actors like Phil Madoc being remembered for these short guest appearances, yet brilliant comedy moments. RIP
