I saw the Monkees twice on their UK tours, the first at Bristol in 92(?)then later at Wembley, both times the places were packed to the gunnels with folk of all ages, babes to wrinklies & to the last person we were all dancing in the aisles & on our seats (which was a bit dodgy & not for the faint hearted in the Bristol Hippodrome’ circle seats) while singing every word at the top of our voices. Great band, great image &, as far as I am concerned, good clean family guys.
So terribly sad to hear of Dave’s departure, rock them in heaven me old!

You’ve got to give the Monkees credit.
As far a being a “manufactured” band, there were no more than most…just more honest about it.

I’d argue that most bands are/were manufactured in some way…either by record labels, producers, or the band members themselves (jealousy, ego, sex/women, money, all shaped the bands as much as “artistic” ideals).
In fact, you can make a case that all of those external factors shaped even the Beatles and allowed their talents to reach an audience.

RIP.

BTW: If you listen to Daydream Believer, listen for the clarinet solo towards the end. A lovely piece of music put there by a great producer and probably sadly overlooked by most of the audience.

I was really sad to hear he had passed away.Having grown up in the 70s and 80s when repeats of The Monkees TV show were a saturday morning treat, It has always felt to me that he was part of my childhood.
They were a far better band than they will ever get credit for, and where the original and arguably the best manufactured band for their time.

Davy and the rest of the band managed to put fun in to music and thats something sorely lacking these days. They all come over as pretty nice down to earth guys too. I turned down the chance to see them on what sadly has become the last tour as Mike Nesmith was not going with them, silly me eh 🙁 .

RIP Davy and thanks for the music, the fun and the memories

He ‘s taken the Last train to Clarkesville. A lot better group than many rated them.
