Today's Pilot Fly-In Update

Hello all,

I wanted to give you a brief progress report on this year’s Today’s Pilot Fly-In.

The event takes place at Nottingham Tollerton Airport on Sunday June 5 and we are joining forces with the Aeronca Club of Great Britain again to co-host the ‘Gathering of US Classics’ on the same day. So hopefully we will attract some rare and exotic classic American designs like last year.

The two main themes this year are 50 Years of the Cessna 172 and 60 Years of the Pitts Special – but obviously everyone is welcome whatever they fly, be it a single, twin, microlight, helicopter, autogyro or jet!

Fans of the Pitts Special should be in for a real treat as Sean Doyle at Leicester is organising a massed arrival of Pitts’ – with 15 of the breed already signed up.

Proceeds from this year’s fly-in will be split equally between Cancer Research UK, the British Disabled Flying Association and the Glen Stewart Flying Scholarship. Last year’s event offered visiting pilots free landings and raised more than £700 for charitable causes through voluntary donations, but it appears some visitors took the ‘voluntary’ part too literally! Consequently, all aircraft landing at this year’s event will be charged a £5 landing fee, all of which will be put into the charity ‘pot.’

Those of you who would like to arrive early are welcome to join us for the popular fly-in party which takes place on Saturday evening with music and merriment. There’s free overnight camping available and if last year is anything to go by it should be a memorable evening!

Anyone planning to fly in to Tollerton that weekend will need to read the fly-in briefing sheets that will be published in the June issue of Today’s Pilot (on sale May 3) and also posted on this website nearer the event. In the meantime the basic airfield information is as follows:

Nottingham Tollerton Airport N5255.20 W00104.75
Nottingham Radio 134.875
NDB ‘NOT’ 430.0 (on A/D)
Two Hard Runways (03/21 & 09/27) PLUS Grass Available
Fuel: 100LL and JET A1 available

Airfield Open 10.00am – 7.00pm (local)

For additional airfield information call 0115 9811327 (tower) or 0115 9815050 (admin) or refer to a current VFR Flight Guide.

PLEASE call ahead for an on-the-day airfield briefing and PPR.

Copies of the fly-in poster should be available to download from this website as a .pdf in the very near future.

I hope we’ll see some of you on the day, let’s try and beat the 250 visiting aircraft we had last year. If anyone has any queries or suggestions please feel free to e-mail me at stephen.bridgewater@keypublishing.com or call me on 01780 755131.

All the best

Steve

Hi Neal,

There were no restrictions last year, but we did has a limited amount of car parking at Gamston the year before. That was one of the reasons we moved to Tollerton.

Ah yeah, thats what I was thinking of.

Hi Neal,

The Pitts arrival is beng co-ordinated by Shawn Doyle at Leicester and I beleive we now have 15 or 16 pilots signed up. Invite letters to all Pitts owners will go in the post over the next few days.

Cheers

Ah good, wasn’t there a restriction last year permitting flyers only?

I may try a get to this. The massed Pitts arrival sounds great.

Is this event going to be restricted to visitors who fly in or are visitors by road welcome too?
