I recently bought a Corolla Verso 2.0 D4D T3 as my Motorway cruiser, the private dealer I bought from insisted on his garage servicing it (I would much rather do it myself LOL!)…anyway right from the start I thought the oil looked a little too black for new stuff (even taking into account that its a diesel :)).
So monday being a lovely day I actually got round to doing it (no haynes manual !)
….the pleasant surprise – well it has a huge man sized spin on metal oil filter 😀 not one of those tree hugging PIT A55 element type ;).
The filter is so big I could not use a chain wrench to loosen it (no clearance on sump) and had to go buy a metal strangle wrench (metal strap wrench)
Just checked dipstick…still pristine after 200 miles 🙂
Bloody garages…;):):D

Hi PeeDee
Yes agreed but my original point was that I had only done approx 25 miles since the alleged service and the oil was already very black and ‘old’ looking,I would not have batted an eyelid with an older diesel since they dirtied up v quickly.
BTW have now done 1000 miles and the oil is only very slightly discoloured
:).cheers baz
Disgraceful garage behaviour.

A pistonrob says, depends where and on the conditions that the vehicle has been used in.
I have a car in Scotland, and a car in Cyprus. I reckon the filter on my Cyprus car gets changed twice as much as the one in Scotland, purely due to the dustier environment.

I remember a day when car owners used to remove the air filter – nothing like hearing a Weber or SU sucking in great gulp fulls of air!

Re Air Filters …these days I only change em just before MOT test unless they are very dirty.

BTW, 200 miles won’t discolour the oil. Give it 500 and report back.

Air filters for modern cars the change interval is 40k or 4 years.!!
At 40k the thing is black and well clogged with dandelion fluff and road dirt no wonder many a diesel over fuel.
Same goes for the fuel filter.
As this one of mine has just reached 3yrs old it was serviced by the dealers for warranty and MOT at the same time next year im doing it & it will get Millers oils which i swear by not the dealers stuff which is cheaper & it will be getting the full service inc the filters, current mileage 18k.
The pollen filter is the one your charged for and it often is missed which is disgusting really.

Well since the service interval on my car (and most I have had in the recent past) is annual or 12,000 miles it is very hard to understand how one would change the air filter every 6,000

Yes, that bit is right. Does the owners manual not rekmend additional work in between?
I like to change my oil and its filter every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, I also change the air filter seeing as it is less than a minutes job. Yes, sometimes I do blow it off if there is an air-line near.

I have a Peugeot 308 1.6 petrol Turbo 150bhp Automatic ( Yea I swapped the big Dodge Avenger) Service intervals every 2 yrs or 20.000 miles . No car needs an Air filter every 4000 miles ( unless its a 1959 Hillman Minx)
A 1959 Hillman Minx would probably have an indestructable metal mesh / Gauze filter which would be washed in petrol then soaked in oil before replacing. 🙂

ref air filters, even in most service manuals its says use an airline to blow it clean but replace if clogged or contaminated or beyond economical use where it will effect engine performance. it also depends on the conditions it has been used in..
but if the garage have charged you for a new one then that is obviously bang out of order..
i run my own workshops alongside a mate of mine who runs his own., i do bikes and he does cars, we do our upmost for the customer even if it leads to being out of pocket on the job involved becouse our names are on the line if we do something wrong. which i must add is extremely rare.
in the bigger workshops corners are cut to save money anyways but if the job is wrong when it goes out then its on the company name and not necessarily the guy who did the job in the workshop.

What car is that on Moggy? Every service checklist I have ever read (OK, only BMW/Ford/BL/GM-Vaux. and Pug.) starts with the basic oil/plugs/filters change. These stay as the basics as one climbs up the service ladder to the 400 point check (BMW 400 point check – other cars have a similar). Air filters should be changed every 5,000 miles. If you have a steel mesh one, it needs putting in the dishwasher every 5k miles. (Then coating again with the spray stuff)

Air filters are not necessarily changed at each service, even the annual ones.

More and more I hear about garages doing a very poor service like this. I do my own stuff like you (Or pay PROPER experts to do it) but some people I know with cars under warranty have put Biro marks on Air filters to see if they get changed. They don’t. If they can’t be bothered doing the air filter, the rest of the service must be rubbish. The stamp in the book means nothing these days.
And, if you have an old car, not worth giving it to the main dealer garage for a service, as it’s an old car they will put a trainee on it (To save the expense of him/her messing up a really expensive new one).
