Just seen this news article.
While I am no great scientific mind I have always thought that anything is possible one day. Not in my life time but maybe the next 10 or so generations.

I think the complexities of travelling at the speed of light are a million times more complicated than travelling faster the speed of sound. But I am fascinated by what we will learn from these CERN experiments.
Agreed and I think that now we have this starting point that the next few generations will be able to take the information and develope technology even futher.
Mega-fast terabillion internet anyone? 🙂

Returning to the serious debate – thank you. Yes it is the first time, IF the results are proven. Does it mean to say that it can be replicated? Was it in fact a freak occurrence?
For man to exceed the speed of light requires an entirely new physics. Man has great mass whereas this particle which MAY have exceeded the speed of light was infinitesimally small. We also stumble up against the theory of relativity and the dilation of time as the speed of light is approached.

The OP had presented a serious debate about this theory and the now new results which seem to turn a theory on its head.
I dont know anything about the scientific end of things here but the article was well written so that anyone had half a chance to understand.
Is this the first instance of anything travelling faster that the speed of light other than anything Sci-Fi related. We broke the speed of sound so why not one day with the right technology the speed of light?
I think as technology gets better each generation then the next generation has a higher base level to start at and can think at the higher level and therefore the technology get ever better.
Does that make sense? I think it does anyhow.

FFS SH do we have to spoon feed you?
Interestingly enough, no. That thought had crossed my mind, but then I thought that the OP had presented us with a serious debate. But, in GD, I should have known better!!

i have always been one to look at both sides and fully believe humans are not as smart as we like to think we are

We are certainly the most intelligent creatures on the planet by a long way. And as far as we can tell are the most intelligent species to have inhabited the earth.
Wrong! As any hitch hiker will gladly tell you.
Dolphins are the second most intelligent creatures on Earth, just above humans and below mice.
Do get a grip 😉

I dont pay tax!!……But I used to !!
By: Sky High - 24th September 2011 at 15:29
Do I know what for sure and for what do I have a guarantee?? To extend your odd logic – birth and death are not knowns nor is paying taxes – not everyone does!!
By: tornado64 - 24th September 2011 at 13:12
how do you know for sure ?? and do you have a written guarantee ??
theories !! there are no guarantees !! and as being proven they can be wholey wrong !!!
the only firm knowns in the universe are birth , death and paying taxes inbetween !!

As I said before your first sentence makes no sense. We are certainly the most intelligent creatures on the planet by a long way. And as far as we can tell are the most intelligent species to have inhabited the earth.
We are not sophisticated monkeys, we are a different species, although related to apes.
As for the future anything is possible except for evolving backwards. It quite likely that we will either wipe ourselves out or die out through for other reasons.
In the lifetime of the earth there is plenty of time for millions more species to evolve and die out before the sun finally fades and dies and takes the earth with it.

humans in general SH we are not as smart as we like to think we are !! we are pretty insignificant in the larger picture of things
and will only either go extinct or evolve eventualy like all the others before on the planet
all we are at the end of the day is sophisticated monkeys !!
we can come up with theories and whilst they may go some way to explaining things they are still only theories !!

We are as smart as we are..not sure what you mean.
