High Speed Rail for UK

The new proposed High Speed Railway. A must have for the 21st Century , or a complete waste of time , money & effort.????

My opinion ?…should have been completed about 20yrs ago….bit late now !!

My prime choice is air travel anyway within mainland Britain and once the recession eases if more cross city routes re-opened that would do me nicely thank you.

Is it more expensive to create nearly straight underground

Is it more expensive to create nearly straight underground tracks than have twisting (avoiding beauty spots) slower tracks that make the project economically non-viable in contrast to leaving well alone?

It may also cause less environmental objections.

The project could go in phases. Geology experts help please:confused: e.g. maybe starting Aberdeen to Glasgow and or Edinburgh.

Question please: What is the total length of the entire London Underground if placed end to end, line by line? (Granted it began in Victorian times but it can be a benchmark for total track distance covered)

You write as though money was no object. The sums of money already mooted are astronomical. How much more do you suppose it would cost if huge sections were underground? And underground habitation not open countryside.

Who is the geography and or geology expert (avoiding the Virgin Pendelino concept) and think of straight as possible tracks, – long deep tunnelling maybe?

Well here we go – we take on the Irishman’s strategy, no toilet/1 toilet for train, no seats all strap hanging, no food or beverages, gambling on board, no luggage, what else can we take out, oh yes guard only standing in drivers cab like on London Underground Victoria Line;)

I find it laughable.
Commuting by train already costs double and sometimes triple what it costs me to commute by car between Fife and Edinburgh. That’s why I take the car. £15 each per head (I car share) covers all costs.

Hope that’s the weekly/monthly and not the daily cost as otherwise it must be a Bugatti Veyron you are driving and if so may I car share too at least just once?:D

You are so right about the rubbish that gets in the way of anything productive ie railway improvements, but then in unionised France they seem to manage and in a lesser unionised Switzerland manage even better.

I find it laughable.
The nation that brought the world the railway has some of the worst rail systems in the world!

The pen pushers getting ludicrously high wages look at the current balance sheet and make short sighted decisions that saves them a penny in the short run but ends up with degraded rail lines, aging rolling stock and hopelessly over crowded trains. To help pay for the mistakes they hike ticket prices.

With the train, you’re looking at £30 to £50. For that you get an unreliable service that is cancelled on a whim or so jam packed you can’t get on. When you do get on you have someone’s sweaty armpit in your face or someone’s smelly breath threatening to cause your breakfast to make another appearance.

No, I prefer the relaxed approach: Hop in the car, pick the colleagues up, go to work. On time, in a good mood and cheap.
So, with all this hopeless mismanagement going on in the industry, would a high speed rail link work?

In theory, yes.
In Practice? Well, it’ll cost too much so people won’t use it. It’ll be late, cramped, smelly and unreliable. Plus, with the idiotic H&C people in the country, the moment the tracks are wet or it’s blowing more than a 5mph wind, the trains will be speed limited for 40mph or something silly like that. If it’s not the weather, it’ll be some idiotic nimby complaining of noise or environmental concerns.

Planning what’s that – it’s all in the nightclub with Red Bull until 4 am and what’s work – oh the place that save’s me saying that I really am a lazy good for nothing layabout and am spared signing on at the Job Centre. I go to work late after the nightclub on a high, ‘crash’ at mid-day unless I have Red Bull injected into me, and talk about my social, sex or what I call a life with my friends; honestly it beats real work or using Facebook which I do anyway while at work on my Iphone or similar. Up everyone who thinks differently to me I am the youth of today (from good or bad homes) :mad:- sorry I do have some great friends’ kids and apologies to you all of you that don’t fit this horrible stereotype. Thank goodness for small mercies😀

Additional Thinking selfishly for one moment although I gladly get on BA, EDI to LHR, I haven’t that same economic (time and money) flexibility from Edinburgh to Manchester or Birmingham unless I go via LHR.

I see it now. Well 30 or 40 minutes can make all the difference between seeing your kids before they get tucked up in bed or leave for school, having dinner with the family, avoid delaying the other attendees at the meeting/s, or as the French may say getting for the mid day nookie with the mistress quicker and still back with one’s wife at a sensible unsuspecting time (3 times a day as the French always say minimum)
