What frightens me is the amount of traction pro-gun views have in the US. They come from the same school of thought, I suspect, that thinks that universal free healthcare is communist or that Obama is an African-born Muslim

Following the story on the Today Programme over the last day or two, the gun lobby have been vociferous in their support for the status quo. I don’t think the fact that all those children being murdered in cold blood is going to change anything.

That said, I hope that Obama, now that he doesn’t have to face re-election, will be bold and try to do something. It will be difficult, though, and the gun lobby will punish the next Democrat presidential candidate in 2016, but there are times when something simply has to be done because it is right – and this is one of them.
