Recently I made a short trip over to Germany so that I could visit FRA to take pics, quite a few months ago I looked into the most economic way of doing the trip, Lufthansa wanted over 450 quid for a return flight to FRA using EDI (my local) but good old Ryanair wanted only 62 quid all in,for Hahn, hard choice so it was off to PIK.
Last time I used PIK was 1980, a Laker DC10 non-stop to LAX, this time it was a Ryanair 737-800, PIK is still the same old PIK but is a lot busier nowadays, anyway on-time the boarding for the flight was announced, time for a quick pic of an Evergreen “lump” on the way to the 737!!
Got myself a nice seat at a window and got strapped in and within minutes of boarding we were taxying.
Flight took off a few mins early and it was time to sit back with my MP3 and just take the flight in, flight was about 80% full, aircraft left as scheduled, plane was a nice new one with factory fitted winglets (I think!!) who can argue at 62 quid return!!
Before it got too dark I took some pics of the nice new winglet. 😉
Not much to say about the flight, Ryanair have a go at selling you raffle tickets and snacks etc, but personally I find them ok for flying with, anyway, we got ready for the approach to Hahn, it was dark now and we landed approx 20 mins early, didnt notice much activity, parked nearby were a United 747 and a big white AN124, no time for pics 😮
Straight to the car hire desk, got my car and it was off to FRA, approx 70 miles away, here’s a link to some of the pics I took, 24 degrees, blue skies 😎

Drive back to Hahn was uneventful, hire car was checked in, and then I got checked in at the Ryanair desk, the terminal at Hahn is pretty good, loads of shops and cafes etc, also, there is a viewing area, its sign-posted so easy to find, unfortunetly the stuff I wanted to photograph was hidden a by a big lamp posts, 2 AN124 and a United 747 and 3 Aeroflot DC10’s, here’s what I managed, viewing is through a glass screen, the glass is clean and easy to avoid reflections when taking pics, here’s my efforts.

Hahn had some biz-jets parked up and some helicopters flying about, also, there was an all white 757 quite hidden away, if you want to take pics of the Ryanair and Wizz stuff then its easy as they park right in front of you, anyway we boarded on time, and trundled of for leaving, big bummer was the windows on this Ryanair 737 werent to easy to take pics, it wasnt dirt but a sort of condensation, anyway, heres my best effort of the Aeroflot DC10’s.
Uneventful flight back, left a very warm and sunny Germany to go to a very cold, wet and miserable Prestwick, heres one that the PIK regulars will recognise 😉
Collected my car and decided to thaw out by nipping into a chip shop in Prestwick, quick drive home and it was now time to see what my 400+ pics at FRA had turned out like.!!

Great report, Robert. 🙂
What was the United 747 doing at Hahn?

Good report there, how did you find FRA main for spotting/photos?
I had a hire car, so never used the terminal, I believe the viewing area is closed but you can spot from McDonalds, I used a very popular spot down the 07L and 07R end, theres car parking situated between the approach to these runways, just a bit further along is a cracking spot for RW 18, theyre all very popular, I went up the opposite end but the strong sun meant there was a lot haze, the viewing areas are easy to find, if need be if anyone does want directions then e-mail me, FRA was pretty busy with all 3 runways being used, I took approx 450 pics, always a good sign !!! Well recomended for a days photography/spotting 🙂

Brilliant photos.
Just one thing, on the photos of FRA, on the last row of photos you said “OE-LTJ ATR42 of Austrian Arrows” when infact its a Dash 8.
Cheers!! I’ve amended it, I should have gone to SpecSavers

Nice report, I take it you stayed overnight?
I see you got FR’s slightly revised winglets on the outbound too. I noticed them when I de-boarded next to one fitted with them at STN after arriving from EDI, the yellow pinstripe has been done away with and replaced with “RYANAIR” on both sides, well you can see it on the inside of the winglet in your pics anyway.
