The Goon Show Scripts

I came across this website, the Goons were my favorites and this one I found very funny, particularly the part where Fred Nurk gets down into the barrel of the cannon. It has always stuck in my mind. Bmused55 and nJayM will obviously side with the Scots :p

As in so many things, Linc, it is only the memories we have……..and they say that as you grow older distant recall is far better than recent recall, but then you’d know all about that.;);):diablo::diablo:

It’s funny you should say that….whatever it was. 😀
Jim.

Courtesy of Wallace Greenslade I went to several of the Goon Show recordings in the late 50s – never to be forgotten – wish I’d had a cassette recorder and camera then!!:D

Martin, I would like to think that one or two may have survived.
I think from one or two replies I have read on this posting, and indeed on one in particular yesterday, that if one is of a certain age, say mid 50s, our sense of humour is totally different to todays younger generations.
What would have made us laugh, today would appear to be offensive.to some of the younger generation.

When up in Buxton last week, went for a pint, and there were three young girls there outside the pub, throwing up, and swearing like a Trooper, and no one took any notice, as if it’s acceptable these days.OH how times change.

It would be great to think a few have survived as threy are very much a piece of history now.
I am 37 but grew up on a lot of the comedies from the 70s and 80s to the extent that in adulthood I have gone on to buy many of them on DVD. The latest humour seems to be people being sick or repeating the same sort of sketch all the time. It does not disgust me, But does bore the pants off me.

I know comedy such as the Goons and Monty Python etc broke a lot of moulds and maybe the modern PC shows with people being sick etc are trying to do the same for the current audience. But its lost on me with the exeception of “Outnumbered”, “Miranda” and “Not going out” that have amused me,but also have an older feel to them.

Comedy moves on I guess.

Would that I were still mid-50s,but I find modern humour much more to my taste than some of the comedy I was brought up on.

One show that still makes me laugh though is Take it from here

This site has information about some old radio shows –

Hi Barry, Not that I myself would know about the “Archers”. I had to ask around to find the answer 😀 but Yes, they are, I may be wrong, and frequently am, but I believe it’s the longest running radio”Soap” still running.

Linc, you are perfectly correct. I used to find the Goons and Dick Barton especially good. Listening to old recordings of the Goons not so funny anymore.
Lots of bollickings for not doing my homework at that time though. Todays so called comedians I find unfunny too. Swearing and references to sexual acts seem to be the norm.
Liked Round the Horn and Life with the Lyons too. Rather corny today of course.
Are the Archers still on?

Some Years ago I worked with a guy who after Micheal Bentine died was tasked with helping clear his house by Micheal’s wife.
He said that she insisted that any scripts they found were disposed of,Although she was OK with them reading them first. He had left behind several Goon show sketches and all of his Potty time shows among other things.
Sadly in a way at the end of the day they followed his wifes wishes and did throw out the scripts, However he did always wonder if any resurfaced somehow.

Don’t forget this was a radio show, and had a tremendous audience. Did you ever listen to “Dick Barton, special agent?”.

it’s probably me but i found harry spike and peter to be phenomenaly talented working on thier own projects

but i can’t find much funny in the goons it is more irritating than funny to me and a waste of three geniuses tallents !!

some very small snippets of the goons slightly raise a smile for me i just don’t think it is worth sitting through the other 95% of tripe !!

I have the tapes, made by the BBC, and often listen to them. Obviously I liked “Little Jim”,” He’s fallen in the water”, made me laugh. 🙂

There are lots of clips from the original broadcasts on You Tube.

This one contains a snippet from my favourite character, Minnie Bannister.
