Adobe Flash Player?

Hi all,

I’ve recently bought a new laptop and have downloaded Internet Explorer 9, however, whenever I view this forum now I am constantly getting a security warning regarding Adobe Flash Player, and I am forever having to click on ‘Yes’ just to get it to proceed to the next page.

I’ve looked on Adobe’s website, and there does not appear to be an updated version of Flash Player for IE9 (yet there is for Acrobat Reader!), so I am wondering if/when will Adobe release the necessary download, and what is the best solution to help resolve this issue in the meantime because its really annoying me.

Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.:)

After discussion with the Webmaster, it seems that we are stuck with the current format due to circumstances beyond his control.

It might be that a sufficient number of emails from regular posters (and customers of Key Publishing) expressing frank and honest opinions of the new format could result in a reconsideration of the status quo by the Powers That Be.

Hypothetically speaking, of course. 😉

Just for clarity: Eset isn’t freeware.

ESET is OK, AVG free is OK.
“Freeware”, they are often only 24 hours behind the master ware…….if at all behind. Stuff like AVG, they are trying to make you buy the product for the extra features, so the Free version is fine.
And, everybody in the World, that knows about PC, says ignore Norton and Mcafee for the reasons stated. I cannot speak for MAC, I’ve never owned nor (I think) used one. I have never heard a good word spoken about Norton – some people I know do use mcafee, simply because they bought it as part of a bundle.
Norton is also very hard to remove, as well as the “Remove software” lark, you have to find its roots in the Registry and/or find certain files in MS DOS in order to rid them.
I have a very expensive condom on my machine, Sophos Enterprise. But when I broke it, I quickly downed AVG Free as my backup.

But does it zap the nasties as well as the others? 😉

It has a very good reputation.

Eset is far less intrusive than either, and certainly throws up fewer conflicts and other issues..

Speaking for myself, and purely as a private individual, I wouldn’t let a Symantec/Norton product (or McAfee, for that matter) within 50 metres of any PC or laptop of mine.

Eset is far less intrusive than either, and certainly throws up fewer conflicts and other issues.

But, as I say, that’s just my opinion.

Ok, thanks all for your replies…

Grey:

I am using Norton’s AntiVirus, the laptop came with a 12mth subscription to it for free, and my friend installed it and set it all up for me.

Indeed, I am running Windows 7.

If it is the Windows System Protection, how do I go about changing it?

Just a thought. two or three years ago, I purchased Norton Anti Virus for 3 comps. Never had I ever had so many problems after installing it.
Some may think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Not I however.
Personaly, (I am not as comp literate as my 14yrs old Grandson) I would never install it in any computer again, it may well be in conflict with your Windows protection , and he, my Grandson sorted it out!!.

Incidentally, there is Flash on the forum. Used for the banner ad rotation. 🙂

Not if you use the NoScript addon in Firefox, there isn’t. 🙂

I am going to answer your points individually, so scroll down this post to see which applies most to you:

PD:

Yes, its a recent thing, I’ve only had my laptop for just over a week. The guy I bought it from is a friend of mine who manages a small computer retail shop on the High St of the town I live in, and so I told him which model I wanted and he ordered it in and set it all up for me. It had IE7 on it initially, but in order to put IE9 on, I had to take that off.

I’d love to show you a “Print Screen” image, I tried to get one before I even posted this thread, but for some unknown reason it won’t paste it as an image into Paint, or any other software for that matter, so I can’t show it to you!

As for your “wasted space on each side of the forum” issue, I might be able to help you as that sounds like a similar issue that I encountered before the Flash Player issue (I seem to attract problems…!:D).

I would suggest that you check the viewing settings on your browser. As I’ve said before, I use IE9, so it maybe different for different browsers, but if you go to the Main Bar (the one with File, Edit, etc.), click on the “View” one and then scroll down to where is says “Zoom”, and check what % you are viewing the page at…if its anything less than 100%, then that might explain why you have so much wasted space either side, because your viewing the page in a smaller size than normal.Linc7:

No, I have not made any enquiries just yet, but will do on Monday when my friend opens his shop up. Just thought I’d put a post up on here to see if anyone could offer any sort of assistance in the meantime.;)

Nah, my whole World is Widescreen, apart from this Forum.

As for Norton, AVG free is probably better than a purchased Norton. It fights like Cat n Dog with the Widows Firewall and puts the PC back several years in terms of Speed.

Cloud 9, if you click “Help” then “About Internet Explorer” it will say ”64 bit version” in the version data if you are on the 64 bit one. If is doesn’t it is the 32 bit version. Also, the 32 bit version will install in the Program Files (x86) folder on a 64 bit system, along with any other 32 bit programs. Native 64 bit programs load in the Program Files folder. If you have 64 bit Windows you should have both folders and if the original download worked properly you should have both versions of Explorer.

I think that this comes about because Microsoft want to produce programs that use the full capabilities of the operating system and 64 bit has a few technical advantages such as improved memory use capability, but the other big suppliers such as Adobe often haven’t fully caught up yet. They have a large catalogue invested in 32 bit programs.

Of course, if you are using Windows 7 32 bit version, none of the above applies. If you don’t know which you have, go to Start-Control Panel-System and it should be listed there under ‘System’.

Cloud 9. you are not by any chance using the 64 bit version of Explorer 9 are you?

Hi Whiskey Magna, to be honest I cannot tell whether I am using the 32 or 64-bit version, can you advise me on what this means (I did warn you I was a technophobe!:o), and how I can go about finding out what it is that I am using?

Surely I would just be better off running/using the 32-bit version all the time then, or at least until they’ve issued the fix for the 64-bit version, as most websites I look at have some element of Flash in/on them, but I suppose the real question here is…why do they [Microsoft] release IE8/9 when it has issues that still need to be resolved or requires you to run two different versions of the same program, just makes no sense whatsoever?!

Thanks ThreeSpool, this would explain the problem then, because after I have clicked on the “Yes” or “No” options, some of the banner ads do not show up when viewing the pages!

I think webby is doing some changes to integrate the key.aero header into the forum layout. I could be wrong, wouldn’t be the first time. 😀

To be honest, I wouldn’t go changing it at all if you’re not particularly confident with IT matters.

Actually, I get the same error message as you in IE9 and I have altered the Win7 System Protection settings and I don’t run Norton AV.

That doesn’t help you at all, but at least you know you’re not alone. 🙂

You could always try Firefox or Chrome………….

Not here it isn’t. I have it reduced width on Chrome

Cloud 9. you are not by any chance using the 64 bit version of Explorer 9 are you? Adobe still haven’t solved the issue of running Flash in the 64 bit versions (just as with in E8) and you still have to run the 32 bit version alongside it for when Flash is required. I am delaying changing to Explorer 9 until they get it sorted out. There is a fair bit about it on the Adobe website.

I’ve just checked another forum that I frequent, that is also “powered by VBulletin”.

That one displays as wide-screen in FF4 and in IE9.

I’ve just asked the Webmaster whether the forum settings have been changed, and I’ll let you know what he says.
