BBC Local Radio

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/8374563/BBC-blasted-for-planning-death-of-local-radio.html

Saw this report today and wondered what member’ views are on Beeb local radio. I dip in and out of it from time to time and find some programmes very interesting, but I am not sure I would want most of the output replaced by National Radio “Idiot”.

There might not be much feeling here but there certainly was with the listeners last Friday morning here in Nottingham.

Let’s try to give it a slight aviation edge, some local aviation coverage from 2009!! 🙂

There’s other NAM stuff in that archive as well!! 😉

I can only echo the sense of your comments, but I think we are in a minority!!

I have brilliant contact with BBC Nottingham and BBC Lincolnshire on a near weekly basis and they both provide excellent coverage for Newark Air Museum, whilst adding interest for their listeners. Likewise NAM tries to support the various local initiatives that they undertake – that way both organisations benefit.

The regional network also provides an excellent opportunity to re-establish contacts e.g. for reunion based events / initiatives that can be focused in to a particular area.

In the mid 1970s I can remember the excitement of the first commercial radio station coming into Nottingham and the impetus that provided to local businesses. That ‘local’ commercial station has now evolved back to become a national commercial station and thereby lost its local and even regional focus – something that shouldn’t happen to the BBC’s local services!

Lincoln 7 – the day the BBC reposnds to its listeners views is the day the day hell freezes over.

Although having said that I was agreeably surprised to read today that in response to a deluge of complaints from viewers about the incessant and loud music accompanying Brian Cox’s new series the music ism to be toned down and the general levels of background music in documentaries is to be reviewed. I have had to switch off David Attenborough because of the invasive musical background. It is as though we are all unable to concentrate on facts without continuous bl***dy music behind everything. Musak is our lives.

But this is a long way from local radio about which, no one seems much moved, with the honourable exception of Twin Otter.:)

SKY HIGH, This comes as no surprise, how else can they afford such massive saleries, and pay hikes?.
I listen to the radio most of the day, telly, unless it’s a docu, is in general boring.Far too many soaps and most programs seem to be aimed at women,
Perhaps thats where the old saying comes from, “A womans work is never done” (Preparing for incoming!!)
As it’s we, the licence payers, I do think we should be given a chance to voice OUR opinions to the BBC, and my advice would be, “If it aint broke, don.t fix it”.

Sorry to bump this but it seems although the forum may not be representative the lack of response might indicate that fewer people than I thought do care about local radio. I am wondering why it’s acceptable to spend £800 million moving chunks of its operation to Manchester, for no cogent reason, but not acceptable to provide local broadcasting. I rarely listen but always thought it provided a good service and one which the BBC ought to be providing.

On the whole, I like it. However, I live in the Radio Cambridgeshire area, but I prefer the presenters and programmes from neighbouring Three Counties Radio. Thankfully Three Counties ‘booms’ in as loud and clear as the other one.

Yes, I am sure it is and to dozens of other volunteer supported museums and similar attractions.

🙁 BBC Local Radio is a lifeline to organisations like Newark Air Museum and I will be lobbying to try and help secure a continued service e.g. BBC Radio Nottingham have featured NAM’s Aeroboot this morning and on their website see Something Different listing here!
