San Francisco

Later this year I’ll have a few days free in San Francisco,at the end of a package holiday to mark our Ruby Wedding.

Does anyone have suggestions for interesting things to see/do ? We’ll be seeing Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate bridge, and Alcatraz as part of the tour. All suggestions welcome,as we’re both reasonably fit ( but sadly, not in the modern sense of the word :p )

I already know about Oakland Aviation Museum, and I’ll be spending part of the actual anniversary day on a tour of the Short Solent ,which’ll give me something to celebrate,at least :diablo:

Thanks for the Grand Canyon tip, though as it’s an organised tour we have to go where we’re told. And get up at the crack of dawn,I shouldn’t wonder.

And what’s wrong with dawn? In San Franciso look for a traditional diner with a big queue. Next morning get up early to beat the queue and have your breakfast there – you’re going for the experience.

And at the Grand Canyon dawn might be 5 am but imagine going home and saying you missed watching the sun rise over the canyon.

Follow your heart and your dreams, it could be a once in a lifetime trip – might as well make it really special. 😉

Oh and, by the way, there are railings.

Say hi to the Solent for me. Have a good trip.

Tell me about it. It is true. Life is what happens whilst you are planning other things.

Go ON your own, tell your wife she can go shopping for clothes for the duration you are away, that should keep her sweet.:diablo:
Seriosly though Mike, go there as soon as you can, life has a habit of flying by without you noticing.
Regards.

It’s a bit further south of San Francisco.
Per wiki…

MacArthur Park (formerly Westlake Park) is a park in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, named after General Douglas MacArthur and designated city of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument #100.

Thanks. Damn.
I’m mixing my memories!
Time for a Format and rebuild.

I think from what you have stated, you may pass Vegas?. and to, and over the Hoover Dam, if you stay on the old road, and stop, just walk to the wall opposite the wall where you can see the bottom, and look into the water, You may be lucky to see the fish, I dont know what sort they are, but they are huge, you may also pass Flagstaff, I got booked for speeding there, and just how much was I over the limit. 2, yes, 2 MPH. Spoiled the holiday , but Hey, Ho, the Canyon more than made up for that.;)

if it is a digital make sure you have a high capacity memory card, or SD card or whatever your camera takes, as you will find yourselves taking many, many photos on a journey such as your taking. Will you be hitting route 66?

:diablo:

Yes,it’s a digital camera, though I managed to lose 600 photos of New Zealand in 2009 by accidentally reformatting the memory card, then overwriting them when Mr. Bee said I’d lost them forever.

No, no route 66,it’s mostly by train.

Having visited the West coast,we hired out a car, and believe me, if it,s Summer, the last thing you willl want is a convertable. It gets VERY hot, but I bet you would have the top up, and the aircon on full blast, if your in your 20s or 30 s thats fine ,but at our age……………………Anyway live life too the full and enjoy yourselves, and don,t forget to try the best Lobsters you will ever taste.

😉 I’ve wasted six+ of my younger years in the States, travelling extensively. Sure wouldn’t take a drophead anywhere down south, but greater bay area it’s fine, not too hot. Actually cold if it fogs up, even in mid summer. Santa Barbara, July, early morning – brrrrr.

Thank you all so much for all the suggestions and photos.

I’m quite touched,I didn’t think I’d get any replies.Well,I don’t seem to on the rare occasions I start a thread on Historic 😉

We’re going in May,flying with Virgin to New York then across to the other coast mainly by train,as the old man thinks trains are fascinating. I’ve never been further west than Washington, apart from a brief trip to Seattle,so it’ll be a real treat.

The holiday includes a visit to the Grand Canyon,so I may be tempted to push him over the edge after being together twenty-four hours a day :diablo:

Anne, If your going to the Grand Canyon, make sure you go to the SOUTH RIM, it’s spectacular, The views are spectacular I find it hard to describe to anyone if it comes up in conversation. I don’t know what sort of camera your taking but if it’s a film camera, get your film over there and get it developed prior to flying home, if it is a digital make sure you have a high capacity memory card, or SD card or whatever your camera takes, as you will find yourselves taking many, many photos on a journey such as your taking. Will you be hitting route 66?, now thats an interesting drive.

Have FUN 😉

You are doing the same to the US as I want to do with Canada. I don’t care what it costs as I doubt I would be doing it more than once. If the other half keeps saying she doesn’t want to do it (even though it was originally her idea) I’ll just say I’m going to anyway. Watch her change her mind then, she won’t dare let me go on my own for fear I might actually have a good time.

I DARE you,,,:D:D:D

Reserve a day, rent a car – a convertible if you can get it.

Drive east across the bay and on till you hit 680, turn north. Pass Suisun Bay and the rest of the Reserve Fleet. Turn into 80 East till Vacaville (interested in outlets?), turn into 505 North till Esparto, follow 16 North. Follow it until you hit 20, turn west. Shortly before Clearlake turn south into 29. This brings you to the northern reaches of Napa, nice driving road. Drive down Napa valley (Calistoga – St.Helena) till Napa. Turn west a little south of Napa, towards Sonoma. Follow 12 up north into Santa Rosa. Try not to get lost there, drive north on 101 for a few minutes, and turn west into River Road (Exit 494). Follow that road to the coast, brings you to Jenner. At Jenner follow Cal-1 down south, stick to the coast as close as possible (careful! don’t miss the right turn after Valley Ford!!). Drive along the bay till Inverness, turn right towards Point Reyes. Follow the road for about an hour all the way out to Point Reyes lighthouse (takes about an hour. take a sweater!). Drive back the same way, back to Inverness, turn right into Cal-1. Follow it all the way till you hit 101, shortly before the Golden Gate bridge.

Very nice drive. Takes about a day. Don’t forget to get some wine in Sonoma valley. Kenwood is good and reasonable, but lots of other options.

Fisherman’s Wharf is like a jumbo version of the tackiest UK seaside town you can imagine. The place stank of dead fish when I went (January) and the tram fare from Market Street was wasted.
Trip round the bay was OK, going under GG bridge and back round Alcatraz was interesting.

Got a nice shot on leaving SFO –
