Not sure where you guys got the idea that he was underated, his talent as a guitarist is legendary, it could be argued that having his face messed up with a broken glass, didn’t help his media profile, but how many guitarists do you see on the ex factor or pop idle, anyway?
My favorite memory of him was Donnington ’84, the ovation he got walking on stage, was something to behold, he wiped the floor with the rest of the acts, including Eddie van driver; a genuinely brilliant player, RIP Gary.
Much the same as Sky High, I meant he was underated by the public, He was never a household name like some of his peers despite having every inch of talent if not more than many of them.
Many people probably know his guitar work on songs, But don’t know its him.
Poop idle and X-lax Factor as I call them are in my opinion not about talent like his or about fame ultimately but thats another story for another thread.
Having just heard what caused Gary to pass on I can’t help but feel its even more of a waste 🙁

Yes, in a way you are right. Can’t speak for others but I meant that he was underrated “publicly” unlike the Becks and Claptons of the fraternity. Publicly I reckon he was remembered for |Thin Lizzy and “Parisian Walkways”, which hardly does justice to his talent.
Good point.
No-one ever seems to mention his jazz-fusion work with Colosseum II, for instance, which was very different from his rock and blues work.

he died aged 58, great rock guitarist ,Ex Thin Lizzy, his single “Parisian Walkways” is a classic and still sounds fresh today ,God Bless Mate.
Sad sad news, I was humming this song to myself when in Paris this new year.
He was an amazing and so underated guitarist. 58 is way too young to go.

A great musician, not always appreciated by the purists, his heart was truly in the Blues. Well done Mr.M, a life well lived.

He had a belting tone out of everything he played, Kabir, not just the Les Pauls! This really is sad news. I saw him live around 12 years ago at the old T&C in Leeds (now the Academy) and he just absolutely rocked the crap out of the place. I’ve seen thousands of guitarists but very, very few like him; you didn’t hear his notes, you felt him as a person through them. Very expressive, very energetic and very passionate. We’ve lost one of the greats.
